Boston College, in retrospect, had an outstanding season in tying for the Big East regular season title. The Eagles were always at their best in tight ballgames, consistently finding ways to win when the contest was in the balance. Boston College’s surprising upset loss to UW-Milwaukee in the 2nd round of the NCAA Tournament took some of the luster of the fantastic campaign. B.C. troubles did not end there though, with rising soph. Sean Williams, slated to move in as the starter at center this year, was suspended from the team and the school after he was charged with marijuana possession in late May. His suspension could be lifted by Coach Skinner at some point this season. Additionally, teammate Akida McLain was arrested after passing counterfeit cash in Pittsburgh. The strength of last years team returns in big-time bookend forwards Craig Smith and Jared Dudley. Smith was named team MVP for the second straight year after averaging 18 PPG and 8.5 boards. Dudley, a junior, was a force with 16.5 PPG and 7.7 rebounds. Both players were first-team All-Big East performers. The competition steps up on a nightly basis in the ACC and the Eagles are well equipped to perform admirably in the initial sojourn thru the Atlantic Coast conference.

The Tigers under first year coach Oliver Purnell decided that youth should be served. Clemson brought in five super freshmen to blend in with Sharrod Ford and Shawan Robinson. Ford has since graduated, with Robinson the returning leading scorer and soph. Cliff Hammonds the team’s next top scoring threat. The key was having the team buying into Coach Purnell’s hustling, scrappy style of basketball. Ball handling will be a major point of emphasis the Tigers have targeted for improvement. Their 17.7 turnovers per game were the worst in the ACC and Clemson was 10th in the league with a 0.82 assists-to-turnover ratio. To move up in the conference, the Tigers have to do a better job of hanging onto the ball. Improved free throwing shooting alone could bring a couple extra wins after last year’s miserable 59.9% effort. The loss of Ford negates an inside presence and the surprise transfer of Cheyenne Moore takes away a versatile performer. Clemson still returns 6 of its 9 top scorers and has Troy Mathis back after his suspension. Moving up in the ACC standing might be difficult, despite better overall talent then a season ago.

The Dukies had to overcome several defections in order to finish with such a solid record and 3rd place in the ACC regular season. Duke loses PG Daniel Ewing and Shavlik Randolph, and that’s all. Coach Mike Krzyzewski could have lost a great deal more, however C Sheldon Williams and J.J. Redick decided to give it the old college try one more time. Plus, Coach K landed his best recruiting class in years with Josh McRoberts who was named the McDonald's All-American Player of the Year, walking into the vacated PF spot. What Duke has assembled is a combination of stars and complimentary players, like SF Lee Melchionni and defensive ace Sean Dockery. With enough young talent to build a solid bench, this team has the look of a pre-season number 1. Coach K will need to find someone to take the point guard position, with this being the only apparent weakness. Once again, high expectations for Duke, as they attempt to go back to the Final Four.

Florida State will get it right again one of these years; unfortunately we never know when that will be. Season after season the Seminoles pull an upset or two, like last year in beating Wake Forest at home and winning at NC State. That is usually blended in with losses to the teams like Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Florida International (which occurred last season) seemingly every season. FSU lost leading scorer Von Wafer, but Coach Leonard Hamilton is evidently not that concerned with a good recruiting class coming in. Wafer was as talented as he was troubled, as the team followed his lead in defensive indifference in allowing 70 PPG. With a great deal of depth and flexibility on the roster, Coach Hamilton should be moving up the ACC standings after last season’s dismal failure.

One of the finest classes the Georgia Tech program has ever seen has moved on. The top six scorers from a year ago will not return, with C Theodis Tarver as the only senior on the squad. Among the returnees, swingman Anthony Morrow is the leading returning scorer with a modest 5.7 points PPG average. The Yellow Jackets will bring in four Top 125 recruits to Atlanta, led by Lewis Clinch and D'Andre Bell. Coach Paul Hewitt loves his players to play defense, which is why the Techsters were 2nd in field goal allowed in the conference and 3rd in scoring defense. His coaching theories will be tested with such a young team and a top half finish in the ACC would be a surprise.

For the first time in eight years, the Terps failed to win 20 games in a season. Maryland’s string of 11 consecutive NCAA bids also came to a halt. The up and down season was exemplified by two wins over Duke and three losses to below average Clemson. For Coach Gary Williams, last year’s NIT semi-final loss hopefully set the building blocks for a return to typical Maryland basketball. With 4 starters returning and 9 of the top 10 players back, Williams wants to reinstitute pressure defense and a faster offensive flow to the Terrapins game. Being tied with Virginia for the worst defensive team in the ACC at 76 PPG, will not work two years in a row for Williams and his reformulated staff. The Terps do maintain a strong home court advantage, 16-3 SU record and an impressive 10-3 ATS mark. With the return of Ekene Ibekwe, Nik Caner-Medley and Mike Jones, significant improvement is expected for the Maryland faithful and a return to the NCAA tournament is expected.

Miami was one of the early season surprises in the ACC, as the talented backcourt quickly became attuned to new coach Frank Haith's preferred playing style and flourished. The rigors of the ACC took their toll late in the year as the ‘Canes withered to a 1-6 finish. Besides establishing a solid work ethic with the players, Haith was able to have the South Florida residents care about his team. Attendance jumped 95%, which included five sellouts with all the big boys from the conference in town. In college basketball guard play is mandatory for success and for the upcoming season Miami will have one of the best in the country. Junior guard Guillermo Diaz who was second in the league at 18 PPG, returns along with running mate Robert Hite who delivered 17.3 PPG. Anthony Harris completes the trio with 12.4 PPG. Soph. C Anthony King surprised the league finishing 5th in rebounding and 2nd in blocks for Miami. Coach Haith brought in additional size and bulk to help this team hold-up for the long run. The Hurricanes will not catch anyone by surprise this season, with their backcourt that should not be a problem.

It was David Byrne of the group Talking Heads who had the line “My God, what have I done” from the song “Once in a lifetime”. That is probably what Roy Williams is thinking privately after last year’s successful run to the NCAA title. To say the Tar Heels are starting fresh is like saying green bananas are not quite ripe. North Carolina has to replace its EIGHT top scorers. The lone returnee of note is senior F David Noel who would be the only recognizable name if you watched the Tar Heels last year. One benefit of this for Roy Williams, who finally corralled his first National Championship, is there will be no expectations of repeating for the upcoming season. No question UNC will take hits this season, however with Williams as the coach this will be a team you will not want to play late in the season.

What does Coach Herb Sendik do to replace his leading scorer, rebounder and passer from the team that made the Elite 8? Fortunately, this was all one player, as Julius Hodge used up his eligibility. He left a team that is poised to do more damage in the ACC in 2005. Coach Sendik now in his 10th year at the helm for the Wolfpack, returns a competent backcourt in PG Tony Bethel and Engin Atsur. The two played very well from February on out for N.C. State last season. Up front, Ilian Evtimov can run the Wolfpack offense from the high post with his passing skills and post-up shooting game. He will have big Andrew Brackman down in the low blocks to pass to. Brackman’s 6’10 frame can be dangerous near the basket. NC State looks deep and talented with the best chance to make a run at Duke for the ACC crown.

The Pete Gillen era ended awkwardly both for him and the university. Most insiders believed that Gillen needed to produce a high grade season in order to keep his job. It was clear by January that the talent was not up to ACC standards and the Cavs were doomed for failure. For reasons known only to those within the walls of this Thomas Jefferson school, Virginia was not able to hire a coach until April, when they landed former DePaul head man Dave Leitao. The former UConn assistant will have returning talent in All-ACC freshman Sean Singletary, as well as hot and cold shooting guard J.R. Reynolds. The frontcourt is painfully thin and will be a problem for the Cavs this season. The team will be moving into a new basketball building in two years and wants to make sure the program is headed in the right direct to fill the seats and luxury boxes. It will not happen this year, as Leitao will need time to place his stamp on the program.

Seth Greenberg has been a well-respected coach flying just under the radar in terms of big time popularity. In basketball circles he is well thought off, but took a curious job before last season at a football factory like Virginia Tech. Nobody was certain how the football team would do in the ACC, however everyone was sure that the Hokies would be a 10th place team or worse team. Well in the words of Gomer Pyle “Surprise, surprise”. Greenberg squeezes every ounce of ability out of a group that appeared limited in ability at the beginning of the 2004 campaign. The Blacksburg community embraced the basketball program, sold out every ACC contest and raised attendance 33%. Virginia Tech has a rough defensive guard combination in backcourt of soph. Zabian Dowdell and junior Jamon Gordon. The Hokies were 4th in the league in points allowed and will be tested this upcoming season. Tech is still weak up front, with not a lot of help coming from the recruiting side. No surprises this year as they will be hard pressed to match last year’s .500 record in conference.

Wake Forest was pleasing to the eye to watch last season, flying up and down the floor, scoring 84.9 PPG. As aesthetically wonderful as that was, the Deacons never played defense. Chris Paul headed for the “bucks” after two years at Wake and his presence will be missed. His lack of effort on the defensive side of the ball will not. Coach Skip Prosser will return the ACC’s # 4 and # 5 scorers from last season in F Eric Williams and SG Justin Gray. The Deacons also have three of their top four reserves back from last year's squad. Wake has a great deal of experience up front and is thin in the backcourt. How quickly Prosser can find a successor to for Paul at the point will determine the Demon Deacons fate.
