Charlotte and Coach Bobby Lutz will bring its well-deserved reputation into the Atlantic 10 and likely keep making a name for itself. Sure the 49er’s lost four starters from last year’s team but the one that is coming back might be the best player in his new league, power forward Curtis Withers. He crashes the boards ferociously and has a nice medium range jump shot to compliment his powerful inside game. Coach Lutz’s favored style is up and down, which lends it self to creating depth. Thus a bevy of experienced players are ready to head to the starters desk. PG Mitchell Baldwin has his handle the ball-handling chores and LeeMire Goldwire will complete the backcourt for Charlotte. Starting opposite of Withers will E.J. Drayton whose 8.7 PPG will add more scoring in the frontline. An efficacious start is expected for Coach Lutz and his 49ers in their maiden voyage thru the A-10.

| StatFox Preview:
All things considered the off-season turned out pretty well for Dayton. Coach Brian Gregory was reported to be a candidate for the DePaul opening, yet decided to stay. Promising PG Trent Meacham decided to go back to his home state of Illinois and will be missed, yet there's lots of young talent still available for the Flyers. Dayton ends up returning 11 of top 13 scorers back. The return of dynamic senior F Monty Scott, who averaged 11 PPG and super sophomores Brian Roberts, Norman Plummer were among the teams top scorers. Dayton lost only one starter from last year’s team that finished behind A-10 West champ George Washington. Reports out of Dayton have all the sophomore class that accounted for 51% of the scoring and 50% of the rebounds, bulking up to better withstand the rigors of A-10 hoops. Coach Gregory learned his craft from Michigan State’s Tom Izzo. That means tough defense and rebounding, along with sharing the ball to distribute scoring. 2005-06 is set for Dayton to return to 20+ victories.

Veteran Coach Danny Nee has his posterior firmly planted on the proverbial hot seat. His four years at this Pittsburgh school have produced a 39-78 record. The man that hired him, AD Brian Colleary, resigned in May of this year. Last year’s leading scorer G Brian McCallister was arrested for possession of marijuana with intent to deliver and has been suspended indefinitely. McCallister also lead the team in steals and was 2nd in assists. The good news after having the second most losses in school history is C Kieron Achara, forwards DeVario Hudson and Chauncey Duke, who saw most of the minutes from last year’s team. return. Nee is hoping that transfer Ryan Lambert and JUCO import Vantrell Rivers can blend right in for the Dukes. 6’10 Ronnie Thomas is expected to provide immediate help up front. The key is McCallister, if does not return, it could be another long season for Duquesne.

Life is good in the Bronx if you are Coach Derek Whittenburg. In his 2nd season at the helm, he brought Fordham back from the depths of total obscurity, to respectability, with 13 wins on the season. That is the most for the Rams since the 2000-01 campaign. Fordham’s surprise came from 6’8 Bryant Dunston, who came out of nowhere to find Atlantic 10 success. Dunston was the Rookie of the Year and is now considered one of the building blocks for Fordham’s future. He will be joined by the backcourt scoring duo of Marcus Stout and Jermaine Anderson, who both posted double digit scoring averages. Sophomore PG Kevin Anderson also is back to direct the three-guard attack for Fordham. Whittenburg inked three recruits, with Tony Bethel and Demetrius Phillips expected to provide immediate impact. An over .500 record will be no shock for the Rams this season.

George Washington was the lone entrant into the NCAA Tournament from the A-10. This team lost long time starter T.J. Thompson to graduation but four other starters, including seniors Pops Mensah-Bonsu and Mike Hall, return. Those two and Omar Williams formulate a loaded frontcourt for the Colonials. 6’5 J.R. Pinnock is the candidate to take Thompson’s slot in the backcourt, with selfless PG Carl Elliott dishing and scoring for GW. Coach Carl Hobbs knows his team is the favorite to repeat as A-10 champions and has the weapons in place to do just that. Look for at least a return trip to the big dance

Dr. John Giannini took over a real mess at LaSalle, replacing former Billy Hahn, who was released after two separate rape scandals involving three different La Salle players. What the good doctor did was nearly a miracle. He guided the Explorers to 10 wins, which turned out to be three more then he had scholarship players. The key to this year’s continued success is Co-Atlantic 10 Player of the Year Steven Smith. The 6’8 power player went to Chicago to find out his NBA value and realized one more year of college hoops could help him realize his dream of being a 1st round draft choice. Beyond Smith the pickings are slim, with Jermaine Thomas and 6-2 sophomore Darnell Harris both scoring in double figures. The possibility of a .500 season exists for LaSalle, but with the entire A-10 upgraded, that may be too much to ask, even with Smith on the court.

For UMass alums, the best news is that former Coach Steve Lappas is gone. His 50-65 record in four years never endeared him for those that still dream about the 1996 Final Four team. In comes a bundle of energy in 35-year old Travis Ford. The youthful Ford is a Rick Pitino disciple, which is music to Minutemen fans ears. Former beloved coach John Calipari fit that same MO. Ford who favors the up-tempo style, has a few players that fit that mold in Rashaun Freeman and Maurice Maxwell, who both scored better then 10 points per game. Stephane Lamse and Art Bowers filled out the other two starting spots. Perimeter shooting was a large problem for UMass and Ford hopes he has addressed that with 6-4 JUCO scoring machine named James Life. Like most coaches who played point guard in college, Ford found his guy in 6’0 Chris Lowe. The renewed energy will return to the Massachusetts campus, along with more victories under Travis Ford.

The University of Rhode Island starts its 100th year of basketball this season, with nobody happier to see it start than Coach Jim Barron. Last year G Dawan Robinson and forward Jamaal Wise were both gone for the season after just one game. The 2004-05 season became a washout after that for the Rams. The positive out of this was the emergence of freshmen Parfait Bitee, Will Daniels and Jon Lucky who started in the latter part of the season for Coach Barron. If Robinson and Wise can return to full health, the Rams can turn things around quickly. Rhode Island also added JUCO dandy Darnell Harris who could further fuel a real resurgence in Rams basketball this winter.

Chris Mooney arrives in a classic good news-bad news situation. The good news is the 32-year coach takes over a program that has had solid success for a number of years. Seniors C Kevin Steenberge and F Jermaine Bucknor are dependable scorers who will be counted on to once again make strong contributions upfront. The bad news is virtually the entire backcourt that was in place or was recruited by former coach Jerry Wainwright has fallen victim to a variety of circumstances that include transferring, unable to be allowed into school and trouble with the law. Mooney will seek to alter his backcourt dilemma by instituting a Princeton style offense. Last year’s near .500 record would appear to be an ambitious goal this program in transition.

Eight new faces will take the floor for the Bonnies this year after last season’s nearly unmentionable campaign. Coach Anthony Solomon brought in six recruits and has two transfers that he will attempt to blend in with last year’s five starters. Senior guards Ahmad Smith and Wade Dunston are the two leading returning scorers and are most likely to keep their positions. The rest will be up for grabs as coach Solomon will have the daunting task of trying to create a cohesive unit with all these different players. With just nine wins in two years, the Bonnies faithful will be looking for better results in 2005-06. However, it could be years before this program fully recovers from its recent woes.

| StatFox Preview:
Head Coach Phil Martelli may be able to yuk it up with the best of them, but don’t be fooled, this guy is a basketball guru. Last year’s team lost on the final shot of the NIT Championship to South Carolina 60-57. The previous year, Martelli had an up-tempo squad with the likes of Jameer Nelson and Delonte West. Last season he changed the team to a more controlled pace to better utilize the skills of sweet-shooting lefty Pat Carroll and the inside presence Dwayne Jones. With the losses of Carroll and Jones, Martelli landed arguably the best recruiting class in the A-10. Four of the Top 250 seniors in the land will be on campus at St. Joe’s. This group of talented freshman will be expected to combine with G Dwayne Lee who is the leading returning scorer for the Hawks. Chet Stachitas will be asked to fill the shooting shoes of Carroll. This team will only get better under the guidance of Martelli and will be tougher as the season progresses.

| StatFox Preview:
The Musketeers after missing post-season play for the first time in nine years look to be headed back. All five starters return for 2nd year head coach Sean Miller. The best of the bunch is Stanley Burrell, who has “a star in the making” quality about him. The sophomore’s 12.5 PPG in ’04 could be only the beginning for him. Justin Gaqe and Justin Doellman both cracked the 10 PPG barrier and could be on All A-10 teams. The key to the franchise is senior PG Dedrick Finn, whose head was not in every game for Xavier. That drove Coach Miller crazy, since he was a heady point guard back in the day at Pittsburgh. The Musketeers welcome three Ohio recruits, with B.J. Raymond being the Toledo Blade Player of the Year, listed as the one player who could see the floor first. Xavier will be an A-10 title contender right from the get-go.
