There is no team in the MAC that will have as much talented, deep and veteran baseline players as Akron. The Zips start with Romeo Travis who blossomed as a sophomore. He is joined by high scoring Darryl Peterson and defensive monger Jeremiah Wood. A couple of 6’9 seniors, Rob Preston and Matt Futch complete what was the best team in defensive field goal percentage in the MAC. Coach Keith Dambrot might have another surprise for MAC members if he can cultivate the guard spots. Dru Joyce does quality work at point guard without much offensive production. Transfer Nick Dials is recovering from off-season knee surgery and if healthy just might be what Akron needs to zip to the top of the MAC standings.

National power Gonzaga is once again expected to be the kings of the West Coast Conference. The power is up front for the Zags, who will be lead by All-American Adam Morrison. The 6’8 Morrison possesses one of the sweetest shots in college basketball and will have other “big boys” to run with. 6’9 Sean Mallon and 6’9 J.P. Batista will help control the lane for Coach Mark Few’s team. The guards are not quite as strong by comparison, which does say something about how good Gonzaga is in the frontcourt. PG Derek Raivio led the conference in assists and nailed 90% of his free throws. Senior Erroll Knight played the most minutes at the other guard and will be pushed by three other shooters for playing time. Coach Few does an unbelievable job in recruiting at this tiny school and will once again have a top-15 team come tournament time.

As Conference USA enters a new era, one thing makes Memphis standout from the rest of its conference bretheren. While the new or prior members have dreams of winning the league title, Coach John Calipari has his team’s sites set much higher, like a trip to Indianapolis and the Final Four. Senior forward Rodney Carney, an all C-USA performer is back along with Darius Washington Jr. Point guard Washington lead the team in assists and steals, so expect Coach Calipari too demand even more from him this season. Senior G Jeremy Hunt hopes to have an injury free season to complete his eligibility at Memphis. The Tigers record is exceptionally better with him in the line-up than not. The frontcourt has a variety of athletes that all have unique skills that give Memphis tremendous flexibility, depending on the opponent. The 8 returning lettermen are joined by one of the best recruiting classes in the country. A special season could be in-store for the Tigers.

The Wolfpack of Nevada should not encounter many difficult nights in the WAC. 6’11 Nick Fazekas will lead the way for Nevada. Fazekas is not only the best big man in the WAC; he is one of the best in the nation. He has a feathery touch out to 20 feet and is an aggressive rebounder at 9.4 per game. Ramon Sessions dropped in 9 PPG as a freshman and senior Mo Charlo averaged 9.4 PPG. G Kyle Shiloh is running the show from the point, with Marcelus Kemp hopefully returning to full strength after a torn ACL kept him out of action in 2004. The Wolfpack added three JC studs to fill-in for depth and will make Nevada even more dangerous. Back-to-back 25-win seasons have the folks in Reno raring to go for another successful campaign for Nevada.

What a difference a year makes, is how the story is told in Athens, Ohio. The Bobcats off an 11-win season, take the MAC by surprise and capture the 2005 league crown and give Florida all they can handle in the NCAA tournament. Now this deep young team is back, with a taste for more. Mychal Green returns with his 15 PPG to lead Ohio U at one guard spot. The other is filled by fearless Jeremy Fears, who is a tireless worker on both ends of the floor. Boston College transfer Johnnie Jackson is one player that really could make the Bobcats special. This athletically gifted 6’6 junior makes Ohio better just by his presence. Swingman Sonny Troutman is known for his basketball brains in making players around him better. A big key is the big man Leon Williams. At 6’8 250 pounds he can destroy unsuspecting players with his immense strength and does attack the glass. He is deadly within 10 feet of the basket. Coach Tim O’Shea now in his 5th year, understands the up and downs of this unique conference where teams rise and fall like the power rock group Creed. His goal is to make sure that the Bobcats keep moving up the national charts.

Coach Mike Anderson has the Blazers steaming up and the down the court attempting to create mayhem at every opportunity. This past season Anderson made it his third 20+ win season in three tries, including his first 20-win regular season. UAB’s frenetic pace is neither easy to coach nor to play against. The Blazers will be led again by 5’10 Cardell Johnson. The quicksilver PG has a 3-1 assist-to-turnover ratio and sacrifices offensive stats for the sake of his teammates. Among the beneficiaries is the most talented Blazer Demario Eddins. The slender Eddins could easily add 50% production to his scoring average of 12.5 PPG. Marvett McDonald is UAB’s top deep threat with 77 treys last year. Once again Coach Anderson will have no player bigger then 6’9, which suits him just fine with the Blazers style of play. More post-season adventures in store for the Blazers in 2005.

The big Australian has left Salt Lake City on the way to being the top selection in the NBA draft. No doubt Andrew Bogut will be missed, as the Utes lost him and two other starters. That is not to say you will need to feel sorry for Utah. The point guard position will be in the capable hands of senior Tim Drisdom. Bryant Markson was allowed to quietly improve his game with Bogut being the center of attention and will have his chance to shine now. Coach Ray Giacoletti taps another Aussie to play in the middle in 7’0 Luke Nevill. He will be joined by Misha Radojevic who at 6’10 has good shooting range and can mix it up. Top recruit Shaun Green is expected to contribute right from the start. He was the state of Utah’s Player of the Year, knocking down 24 PPG and 10 boards. His skills include a nice mid-range game that fits nicely into the Utah system. The Utes seek to defend the MWC crown and earn another NCAA berth.

After being in the shadow of Pacific the last few years in the Big West, Utah State broke through and defeated the Tigers in the conference championship to earn a NCAA berth. The Aggies switch leagues, only to find an equally large shadow in Nevada in the WAC. Utah State is exhausting to play against because they take only good shots. In fact, the key to the Aggies’ success is shot selection, as they lead the country in field goal percentage at .525. For the Utah State, Jaycee Carroll is one of the best 3-point shooters in the land making 47.6%. He will be joined Nate Harris, who was third on the Aggies in scoring at 14.7 PPG, and senior PG David Pak. Expect the Utah State to immediately compete for the title in the WAC under Coach Stew Morrill and possibly make another visit to March Madness.

Former Coach Bruce Pearl did an amazing job of turning this sleepy little Midwestern school into one of the top mid-majors in the country. New head man Rob Jeter will see what he can do to keep the Panthers in the national spotlight. One outstanding benefit to start is the return of four starters from last year’s Sweet 16 team. Guards Boo Davis and Chris Hill make up the backcourt with a range of skills and ball-handling abilities. Adrian Tigert has nailed down one of the forward positions with All-Horizon Conference forward Joah Tucker at the other spot. The program is now at a consistent Top 50 level, with annual tournament expectations that Coach Jeter will be expected to maintain. Another Horizon title is to be anticipated along with a bid to the tournament. The Panthers will quickly find out where they stand with a Preseason NIT contest with Memphis.
