Southeast Division Preview
According to oddsmakers, play in the Southeast Division in 2005-06 is a mere formality as Miami is up to 1-15 favorite to capture its second straight division title. On paper, there is no disputing that claim, as Shaq and Wade form the most potent 1-2 punch in the league, and after making the East finals a year ago, appear poised to take it one step further this season. The Heat have added a host of new players to the roster, including a trio from Memphis. Barring major injury, the only other team that could even dream of winning this division would be the Washington Wizards, a team coming off its first playoff series win in years. However, the Wiz lost a major contributor in the offseason in F/A Larry Hughes and are left to pick up the pieces. The other three teams, Orlando, Atlanta, and Charlotte all appear to be a couple years away from serious contention, and perhaps another trip to the lottery would be better for their respective franchises.

1. MIAMI Last year's playoff loss should prove an invaluable experience for this team. Shaq-Wade are joined by Walker, Posey, and Williams on what appears to be the East's best roster.
2. WASHINGTON Though the loss of Hughes is a dagger to the franchise, there are still enough things happening to be excited about. Keep in mind, Arenas and Jamison were the All-stars.
3. ATLANTA As ugly as Atlanta's play was on the court last year, the offseason front office spat was uglier. However, this lineup is not bad. Sure, loaded with swing players, but still, not bad.
4. ORLANDO Orlando is actually counting on more from Grant Hill this year? I guess you have to after losing your 1st round pick overseas. A whole lot of things going wrong for this team lately.
5. CHARLOTTE Did Charlotte really draft two UNC players in the 1st round? A gesture for selling tickets, yes, but the jury's out on the potential impact. Look for a more expansion-like effort in 06.
