SEC Preview In 2004, the Southeastern Conference experienced an unusual circumstance, an undefeated team from its highly regarded league being shutout of the national championship picture. Auburn rolled to 13-0 record a year ago, including an impressive 38-28 dismantling of Tennessee in the SEC title game, only to finish third in the BCS standings behind two other power conference unbeatens. It's a scenario that probably won't be seen again for long time, and one that commands more attention to a potential playoff system. It was still a remarkable season for the Tigers but one that might be remembered more for what didn't happen on the field than for what did. Elsewhere, the Volunteers enjoyed a renaissance season behind a pair of freshmen quarterbacks, capped by a Cotton Bowl win, and Georgia said goodbye to an elite class of seniors by winning the Outback Bowl. It wasn't so pretty at other schools though as LSU fell victim to a miraculous play by Iowa in the Capital One Bowl, and Alabama and Florida each lost their respective postseason contests. The most noteworthy incident though surrounded the season finale game between South Carolina and rival Clemson, in which a massive brawl ensued at the end of the contest, marring the coaching finale of Lou Holtz at USC. Both teams elected to withdraw from bowl consideration following the ugly incident. Read the full story by clicking here or visit any of the other recently posted previews: |

NFC North 2005 Preview Though Green Bay eventually won the 2004 NFC North division by a full two games, the race between it and Minnesota essentially came down to a single drive and field goal kick by the Packers in the Metrodome on Christmas Eve. In that winner take all contest, it was Brett Favre and the Pack emerging victorious. Unfortunately for them, the Vikings got the ultimate payback two weeks later in a wildcard playoff game at Lambeau Field. The Vikings would eventually lose to Philadelphia in the divisional round. For Green Bay, it was a third straight division title, for the NFC North though, it was just another season without making a major impact in the postseason, as the ol' Black and Blue division hasn't placed a team in the NFC title game since 2000. For 2005, it would be a bit overzealous to think that either of those two teams won't be in contention for the league honors. Green Bay boasted one of the league's best offenses a year ago, got good news from Favre regarding a return to the field, and introduces to a new defensive scheme behind coordinator Jim Bates. Minnesota has made a big splash in the free agency market and added several players in the draft, made possible by the trading of Randy Moss. Of the other two teams, Detroit has the capability of turning a few heads this season as its dynamic young receiving corps is among the best in the NFL. However, the Lions struggled badly down the stretch of 2004, closing on a 2-8 run. Meanwhile, Chicago comes off a 5-11 season and is still trying to find an identity under 2nd year Head Coach Lovie Smith. In fairness to him, injuries were a major problem a year ago. When its all said and done, most experts believe the playoff upset combined with the influx of new talent makes Minnesota the favorite to unseat Green Bay atop the NFC North in 2005.

Miami travels north to take on rival Florida State The college football season gets off to a fast start as national powers Miami and Florida State meet on the season's first weekend. This Labor Day clash could go a long way in deciding each team's future for the 2005 campaign. However, it may not be the last time these rivals get together, as each is expected to be a serious contender to reach the inaugural ACC championship game in Jacksonville in December. All StatFox visitors have access to the key handicapping trends, situations, score projections and more for this big game! That's right, Miami at Florida State is our FREE week one College Football FoxSheet!
Miami comes off a 9-3 season which was culminated by a 27-10 victory over Florida in the Peach Bowl. However, the 2004 campaign was disappointing for the 'Canes in that it was the first time in five years that they didn't win 10 pr more games. They will attempt to improve in 2005 with a younger squad, headed by potential star QB Kyle Wright. Meanwhile, in Tallahassee, the Seminoles also come off of a 9-3 season. They knocked off West Virginia in the Gator Bowl their last time out. Unfortunately, the news of the past offseason was filled with far more negative then positive, and the team will be starting with several fresh faces at key positions. This game should be a great barometer for both teams.
Keep in mind that Miami has compiled a 6-0 SU & 5-1 ATS mark against Florida State over the past five seasons!See this and all of the rest of the key game information by visiting our FREE College Football FoxSheet! |
