 NBA 2005-06 Tip-Off

StatFox says:
Hello everybody, man time is flying! Seems like just yesterday that we were kicking off the football season. We are now ready to tip-off the 2005-06 NBA campaign! StatFox is nearly in full basketball mode already, and we have begun to release a series of great preview sections on the coming pro basketball season. To supplement all of that, we are dedicating this week's edition of the StatFox Scuffle to the NBA.

In this scuffle, we will be looking at season over-under win total props for the teams, plus some other futures odds on divisional, conference, and league title aspirations. So without further ado, I welcome in our esteemed, or is that steamed, panelists, StatFox Doug & StatFox Steve. Good day gentlemen and welcome to the scuffle.

StatFox Doug says:
Good Day Mr. Granik, sorry to see you step down after this year. Hello Steven, I took my medication just like you asked and hope to have a kinder gentler Scuffle this week. (Why does my eye keep twitching?)

StatFox Steve says:
Good day my comrades...great to be back for the scuffle, hard to believe its NBA time again! Let's get at it...Doug, word on the street is that you are a HUGE fan of the new dress code, and plan to adopt it in your everyday life. Is that true?….

StatFox NFL Tournament of Champions Week seven of the StatFox NFL Tournament of Champions is in the books and what a week it was for the T.O.C. Of the top 50 finishers, 36 nailed their 7* selection, the best showing of the year. The top 13 finishers were a combined 75-13-3 85.2% against the spread, now that is impressive.

This week saw a record number of 4th quarter comebacks and last second victories and we had a couple of our own. The winner this week is SKEETERB who maxed out on his plays with a perfect 7-0 record. He grabbed the upper hand early using Kansas City as his top play on Friday and laid the wood with big favorites Indy and Washington. SKEETERB finished it off with the Falcons on Monday night. The key was the last second Minnesota field goal that ended up making the rest of the card look perfect. Congrats to SKEETERB who takes home the Miller prize pack and takes the seventh chair at the Tournament of Champions.

MK3GIRL lost in a most difficult manner with a push to finish 6-0-1, a single point behind a winner. She too was unafraid of the big numbers in using the Colts and Redskins as her top choices. This was a classic example of "Heartbreak Hotel" for MK3GIRL, but an outstanding effort nonetheless.

In 3rd place was BEANSOFBOSTON who missed being undefeated by a lousy ½ point as the Eagles just missed covering the number. Once again the Houston and San Francisco were not highly thought of as, BEANSOFBOSTON played against these rotten teams.
Rounding out the 25-point finishers were DARK HORSE, FASTEDDIE222 and T.O.C. qualifier AVWXMAN. DARK HORSE was left to wonder how Arizona actually covered after having just 9 first downs against his Tennessee choice, with AVWXMAN watched in anguish as the Packers blew 17-0 halftime lead. FASTEDDIE222 dropped his two weakest plays and rode the Indy, Washington train also. This week's prize is a Digital Golf Scope.

This pocket-size scope is so easy to use and take along. It measures distances from 51-468 yards, so it will come in handy whether you're behind a bunker or a lengthy par five. This scope has a general purpose mode that even allows you to calculate distances of objects when you're off the golf course. DO NOT miss your opportunity to position yourself with seven of our weekly WINNERS in the Tournament of Champions. Besides, that 51 inch rear-projection TV might look sweet in your house.

Good Luck from StatFox and Sportsbook.com

Inter-Conference Powers Meet in the Mile High City A pair of Super Bowl hopefuls will get together for the first time in 17 years on Sunday when Denver hosts Philadelphia. This rare but scintillating matchup takes center stage as StatFox.com's FREE NFL FoxSheet of the Week. Both teams come in off nail-biting decisions last week, only the Eagles were triumphant in their game over San Diego while the Broncos fell late at New York. Those results left both teams with two losses apiece, setting the table for this key showdown as neither team wants to lose ground in their respective conference races. Denver has been established as a 3 to 3-1/2 point favorite, with the total set at 42-1/2.
Much has been made of late about Philly's inability to run the ball. This team is riding squarely on the back of QB Donovan McNabb. However, as the following trend indicates, that might be just what the Eagles need to continue to do if they're to come away with a win over the 26th ranked pass defense in the NFL:
StatFox Matchup Power Trends against similar type opponents favoring PHILADELPHIA to cover the spread
PHILADELPHIA is 18-7 ATS (+10.3 Units) vs. poor passing defenses - allowing 235 or more passing yards/game since 1992. The average score was PHILADELPHIA 25.3, OPPONENT 19.0 - (Rating = 0*)

With that in mind, there is also a Denver trend indicating we could be in store for a shootout:

StatFox Matchup Power Trends against similar type opponents favoring the OVER against the total
DENVER is 17-6 OVER (+10.4 Units) in home games vs. good passing teams with a completion pct. of 61% or better. since 1992. The average score was DENVER 28.7, OPPONENT 20.9 - (Rating = 1*)

Spotlighted Dimmed on Longstanding Big 12 Rivalry Long considered one of the best rivalries in college football, Oklahoma and Nebraska have played numerous classic and critical games throughout the years. Unfortunately, with the teams' struggles so far this season, Saturday's game does not take on as much significance, yet it is still Oklahoma and Nebraska, and worthy of the StatFox designation as this week's FREE College Football FoxSheet of the Week. The Sooners have dropped three games and barely survived another close call last week against Baylor. At 4-3, they cannot afford too many more defeats if they hope to play in the postseason. On the other sideline, Nebraska stands at 5-2, but much to the dismay of fans, has lost its two most important games and stands at just 2-2 in conference play. Linesmakers set Oklahoma as a 1-point opening line favorite, but that has since flipped to where the Cornhuskers are 1-1/2 point chalk.

These teams met for the first time in three years last season and host Oklahoma walked away with a 30-3 win, though it failed to cover the 29-1/2 point spread. The last time Nebraska hosted the Sooners in Lincoln was in a 20-10 win in 2001. You can bet that the home folks will be anxious to beat up on a downtrodden OU squad. However, it won't be easy, as most of the key FoxSheets indicators are pointing to Oklahoma as possessing some strong value here as the underdog. Here are a few of the top tidbits:

StatFox Super Situations favoring OKLAHOMA to cover the spread
Play On - All teams where the line is +3 to -3 (OKLAHOMA) - after 1 or more consecutive straight up wins, winning between 51% and 60% of their games on the season. (30-6 over the last 5 seasons.) (83.3%, +23.4 units. Rating = 4*) - Note that 4* FoxSheets Super Situations have been on fire this season!!!!

Also, both StatFox Game Estimators project an outright Oklahoma win in this game, with scores of 24-21 & 20-18. The Sooners are also expected to outgain Nebraska 330-281. Finally, one strong indicator for Nebraska reads like this:

StatFox Matchup Power Trends against similar type opponents favoring NEBRASKA to cover the spread
OKLAHOMA is 15-29 ATS (-16.9 Units) versus good rushing defenses - allowing <=3.25 rushing yards/carry since 1992. The average score was OKLAHOMA 22.5, OPPONENT 26.4 - (Rating = 0*)

Kickoff of this contest is scheduled for 12:00 PM ET on Saturday.
