Key Historical NFL Divisional Playoff Round Trends

The Divisional Playoff round of the NFL postseason has produced the most lopsided scores as the teams that have earned the right to rest through the Wildcard round have owned their visiting foes. In fact, the average margin of victory in this round has been over 15 PPG.

  • The home team has been most dominant in winning games in the Divisional Playoff round, with a SU record of 41-11. Its ATS mark of 28-22 (56%) slightly trails the Wildcard Round though.
  • Discounting the rare four road covers of the 2004 Divisional Playoff Weekend, Home teams are a stellar 21-3 SU & 16-7 ATS (69.6%) in this round.
  • Favorites in the Divisional Round own an ATS mark of 26-21 (55.3%) since '93.
  • Favorites of more than a TD are 20-3 SU & 15-7-1 ATS (68.1%) in the Divisional Round since '93!
  • There has been only one home underdog in the last 13 years of Divisional Round play, and that was in '97 when host Carolina upended Dallas 26-17 as a 3-point dog.
  • The last six times that a 6th seed has advanced to the Divisional round, it has been blown out. The average score of these games was 39-14, and the home team was 6-0 SU & ATS.

Carolina visits Chicago

Carolina continues its quest for a second trip to the Super Bowl in three years but the Panthers will have to do it on the road once again, as they travel to Chicago to face the 2nd seeded Bears in the NFC's Divisional Playoff Round. This contest is showcased by StatFox as it's FREE Special Edition NFL FoxSheet of the Week. Coming off the upset win at New York last weekend, Carolina has been installed as a 3-point underdog in this game. The total is set at an incredibly low 30.

Both teams enjoyed 11-5 regular season campaigns, but Chicago holds the head-to-head edge, having defeated the Panthers 13-3 at Soldier Field in October. That game was symbloic of the Bears' defensive dominance this season. They will need a similar effort this week if they hope to advance to the conference title game a week from Sunday. Meanwhile, Carolina's defense was just as dominant last week in the 23-0 shutout of the Giants. If they continue along that route, they will almost certainly be playing again next week, as it is commonly understood that they own an offensive advantage over Chicago, boasting playmaking WR Steve Smith. From all indications, this looks like a difficult game to handicap, as Chicago holds the situational edges and Carolina boasts the stronger trends and statistics. Take a look at some of the top features from this week's FREE NFL FoxSheet:

Villanova at Texas

Two of the premier college basketball programs in the land this season get together in a mid-season non-conference clash. Both Texas (13-2) and Villanova (11-1) hold Final Four aspirations for March, and thus, this contest could prove monumental in terms of confidence and seeding. The Longhorns come off one of their best efforts of the season on Monday, a 20-point win at Iowa State. Their two losses thus far came to Duke and Tennessee. Meanwhile, Villanova lost its first game last Sunday to West Virginia, then rebounded with an unconvincing victory over Rutgers. Clearly, the momentum, in addition to the home court edge in this game, sides with Texas. Will that be enough?
