1. Pau Gasol’s expected debut a boost for Lakers - 11/18/2009
Kobe Bryant took it upon himself to help lift the Los Angeles Lakers out of their offensive funk in their latest game, scoring 40 for the 100th time in his storied career. The return of Pau Gasol should make Los Angeles even more formidable. Gasol is expected to make his season debut Thursday night as the Lakers continue their five-game homestand against the Chicago Bulls, who opened their lengthy circus road trip with an impressive win.

2. Betting your favorite NFL running team Thursday - 11/19/2009
For any team with a smashmouth running attack, it stands to reason that a strong offensive line and group of running backs would be key. So it’s easy to see why Carolina and Miami might be in a little trouble when they square off in Week 11. The Panthers lost starting left tackle Jordan Gross to a broken ankle in last week’s 28-19 win over Atlanta, while the status of Dolphins Ronnie Brown is officially listed as done for the season. The Wildcat stud left last week’s 25-23 win over Tampa Bay in the third quarter with an ankle injury, though Ricky Williams more than picked up the slack with 102 yards on 20 carries.

3. Spurs and Mavericks in quick turnaround - 11/18/2009
The San Antonio Spurs have yet to win or cover on the road in three attempts, but should have some confidence playing an opponent they beat at home a week ago while short-handed. There’s little question that the surging Dallas Mavericks are confident after winning the final three games of a road trip. The Southwest Division rivals meet for the second time in eight days Wednesday night when the Mavericks begin a three-game homestand.

4. Big shifts for Redskins, Titans prove smart - 11/16/2009
Lines on pro football games this week were relatively static, moving a half-point or a point here and there. But the lines for two games made somewhat substantial moves, and the direction the money flowed was surprising at first blush.

5. New Jersey a devil of a road team - 11/15/2009
Road trips have been anything but intimidating for the New Jersey Devils, who begin a three-game stretch away from home with a chance to make history. The Devils look to tie the NHL record for consecutive road wins to start a season when they visit the Philadelphia Flyers on Monday night.

6. New Goalie Helping Philly - 11/11/2009
Ray Emery’s career with the Ottawa Senators was memorable, but not always for the right reasons. Now with Philadelphia, Emery faces his former team for the first time and the Flyers seek their fifth straight win on Thursday night when they host the Senators. Philadelphia (9-4-1, 9-5 SU) signed Emery to a one-year deal in June, giving the goaltender another shot at the NHL after he played in Russia following an acrimonious split with Ottawa (8-5-2, 8-7 SU) at the end of the 2007-08 season.

7. Big Men in focus for Cavs and Magic matchup - 11/10/2009
In a rematch of last season’s Eastern Conference finals, perhaps the most intrigue surrounds two players that weren’t even a part of the series. Shaquille O’Neal and the Cleveland Cavaliers meet Vince Carter and the Orlando Magic on Wednesday night for the first time since the playoffs.

8. Houston at Dallas – Early Showdown - 11/9/2009
The return of Josh Howard brings the Dallas Mavericks more balance. It seems the Houston Rockets have little choice but to go that route offensively. These in-state rivals play Tuesday night for the first time since Dallas cost Houston its first division title in 15 years. The Rockets had the Southwest Division crown and the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference within their grasp going into their final game of the 2008-09 season, but they lost 95-84 in Dallas. That gave San Antonio the Southwest title while Houston settled for the fifth seed, one spot ahead of the Mavericks.

9. Colts still AFC's best despite failing to cover - 11/8/2009
Even when Peyton Manning falls short of perfection, the Indianapolis Colts still win. Sometimes they win with ease and occasionally, as we've seen the past two weeks, they do it ugly. Manning seems rather boring and stiff, and he's not in the running to be voted The Most Interesting Man in the World, but every other NFL quarterback -- aside from Tom Brady -- lives vicariously through him.

10. Variety spices up this Breeder’ Cup Classic - 11/4/2009
In the 26 years that the Breeders' Cup Classic has been run, the $5 million edition on Saturday at Santa Anita's Oak Tree meeting might have the most eclectic field.

11. Pittsburgh Red-Hot Road Warriors - 11/4/2009
The Pittsburgh Penguins are getting close to matching the NHL record for road victories to start a season. Extending their run away from home could be difficult as they get set to face the league’s leading scorer in Los Angeles. The Penguins look to open 8-0 on the road when they meet Anze Kopitar and the Kings on Thursday night.

12. Miami tries to turn up heat on Washington - 11/3/2009
The Miami Heat won their first three games with solid defense, but they couldn’t slow down the league’s highest-scoring team last time out. The Heat look to bounce back from their first loss and return to form on the defensive end Wednesday night when they visit a Washington Wizards team that has been inconsistent on offense.

13. Struggling powerhouses collide in Detroit - 11/2/2009
The Boston Bruins and Detroit Red Wings were two of the NHL’s top teams last season, but neither club has carried that level of play into 2009-10. The Red Wings do have a solid performance to build on as they return home Tuesday night to face the Bruins, who are slumping offensively without two of their biggest stars.

14. Giants blow it again for bettors - 11/2/2009
With a chance to throw crushing blows to Las Vegas sports books the past two weeks, Eli Manning instead threw interceptions, and his New York Giants are now an enemy of the betting public. So reliable for so long and almost always money on the road, the Giants played dead again Sunday.

15. NHL Pacific Division desert roundup - 11/1/2009
The Phoenix Coyotes have been the NHL’s stingiest team during their surprising start, but the Los Angeles Kings are one of the few clubs that has found ways to score against Phoenix goalie Ilya Bryzgalov. After splitting their first two meetings, the Pacific Division rivals face off for a third time Monday night at Jobing.com Arena with the Coyotes looking for a fourth straight win overall.

16. World Series Game 4 Betting Preview - 11/1/2009
The New York Yankees wanted a dominant pitcher to lead them deep into the postseason, so they made CC Sabathia the richest pitcher in baseball history. Now, Sabathia can now move them within a victory of their first World Series title in nine years. The workhorse will take the ball on three days’ rest Sunday night when the Yankees and Philadelphia Phillies play Game 4 of the World Series at Citizens Bank Park.

17. World Series Game 3 Betting Preview - 10/30/2009
Without any offense from Alex Rodriguez, Jeter and the New York Yankees totaled four runs in the first two games and still eked out a split at home. Now, the Series shifts to Philadelphia for Game 3 on Saturday night, with Cole Hamels set to start for the Phillies against fellow lefty Andy Pettitte.

18. Boston looks to extend Edmonton’s misery - 10/30/2009
Inconsistency has plagued the Boston Bruins so far this season, but they’ve been just about as steady as a team can get against the Edmonton Oilers in recent years. After again falling short of a second straight victory, the Bruins look to extend a seven-game winning streak against the visiting Oilers on Saturday afternoon.

19. Early NBA Division Showdown - 10/28/2009
The Portland Trail Blazers and Denver Nuggets took the Northwest Division title race down to the final week of the regular season and both are expecting another tight battle in 2009-10. Coming off season-opening victories, Portland and Denver meet for the first time in the new campaign Thursday night at the Rose Garden.

20. Changes for New Orleans and San Antonio to start season - 10/27/2009
With Tim Duncan’s career quickly approaching the finish line, the San Antonio Spurs may have acquired the right pieces for another championship run with their star center. Coming off their longest summer break since 2000, the Spurs open their season Wednesday night, when they host a New Orleans Hornets team that’s also looking to bounce back from a first-round playoff exit.

21. NBA Opening Night –Celtics at Cavaliers betting preview - 10/27/2009
There are plenty of uncertainties surrounding the future of the Cleveland Cavaliers and Boston Celtics as they’re currently constructed, and after discouraging playoff exits for both teams, the pressure to win now has only increased. Shaquille O’Neal and Rasheed Wallace have some experience doing just that.

22. Minnesota out to control Chicago again - 10/25/2009
Things didn’t end well with the Chicago Blackhawks for Martin Havlat. His beginning with the Minnesota Wild hasn’t been too good, either. It’s unknown what kind of reception Havlat will receive Monday night in his return to Chicago as the Wild go for their first road victory and first winning streak of the season. Havlat was the Blackhawks’ leading scorer in two of his three seasons with the team and had a career-high 77 points during their breakthrough 2008-09 campaign.

23. Yankees look to clinch pennant at home - 10/23/2009
Chone Figgins and the Los Angeles Angels know they’re heading straight into more than one kind of storm, and they can’t wait to get wet. Heavy showers washed out Game 6 of the AL championship series Saturday, yet that’s a minor drizzle compared to the high-pressure system the Angels created for both themselves and the Yankees by extending the ALCS to the weekend.

24. Minnesota tries to go wild in St. Louis - 10/23/2009
A road-heavy early schedule has taken its toll on the Minnesota Wild. The Western Conference-worst Wild look to avoid a seventh defeat in as many road games this season Thursday night when they take on the St. Louis Blues. Minnesota (2-6-0), adjusting to a new system under first-year coach Todd Richards, already has played six road games and lost them all while getting outscored 22-11.

25. Yankees one game away from Fall Classic return - 10/21/2009
When Derek Jeter recalls the last time the New York Yankees got this close to the World Series, he gets chills down his spine that have nothing to do with the cold he’s fighting. “If you have the opportunity to get something over with, you’d like to do it,” the New York captain said. “It’s not always going to happen.”
