1. Potentially misleading NFL statistics? - 11/20/2009
With the NFL bye weeks having concluded last Sunday, one of the major handicapping variables has been minimized, that being scheduling. With that said, many people get back to the bare bones basics for the rest of the season, using statistics, trends, systems, and power ratings. Of course, FoxSheets offers up analysis on all of those factors, but one of the things I want to look into in this article is stats that may or may not be misleading when it comes to gauging the actual strength of a team. Two particular stats that I thought might qualify are Yards Per Point (YPPT) & Turnover Differential (TO Diff.).

2. Last race betting opportunity of 2009 at Ford 400 - 11/18/2009
The 2009 Sprint Cup Championship will be decided on Sunday at Homestead-Miami Speedway and at this point, the naming of the champion seems to be merely a formality. Jimmie Johnson has opened up a 108-point lead over Martin with just the Ford 400 remaining on the season schedule. Johnson can clinch his record-setting fourth consecutive championship by finishing 25th or better. Of course, in sports, anything can and has happened, so it would be premature to just hand the trophy over to him without at least running Sunday’s 267 laps around HMS. Oddsmakers don’t expect Johnson to coast in this race, as they’ve establish him & Martin as co-favorites, at 6-1 odds.

3. NBA Back-to-back Team Tendencies - 11/17/2009
One of the most trying factors for handicappers when considering NBA basketball is the back-to-back scenario. Schedules aren’t as routine in the NBA as they are in baseball and football, so naturally, fatigue is a more prominent variable that the bettor has to consider. For that reason, I’m going to be dedicating the next two Platinum Sheet feature articles to studying back-to-back performance angles. In this first part, I will be looking at each individual team, while next week I will be focusing on league wide systems. Hopefully, we’ll uncover some nuggets you can employ the rest of this NBA season and beyond.

4. Eventual champion usually thrives at Phoenix - 11/13/2009
The 2009 Chase for the Sprint Cup has come down to just two races, and after Jimmie Johnson’s troubles at Texas last Sunday, the title chase is at least interesting again. Sunday’s race at Phoenix International Raceway will put the spotlight on Johnson, Mark Martin, and Jeff Gordon, as just 112 points separate the three. Interestingly, those are the only three drivers to win in the five prior COT races at Phoenix, so it should be very competitive. Johnson won three of those and has five straight Top 5’s, and oddsmakers expect him to bounce back, making him the favorite for the Checker O’Reilly Auto Parts 500 at 7-2 odds.

6. NBA: Money Lines vs. Pointspreads - 11/12/2009
As I was flipping through DirecTV’s coverage of all the NBA games one particular night last week, I was astounded by the number of underdogs that were winning their games outright. While on the winning side of a few of those wagers, I began thinking to myself how much money I just cost myself by simply playing the pointspread instead of the money line. After all, I really only bet an underdog in the NBA if I think they have a chance to win, so why not try to hit the bigger payout? In any case, it led to an idea for an article, that being to study the relationship of pointspreads vs. money lines in hopes of zeroing in on a strategy to employ night in and night out.

7. NBA Top Weekend Power Trends 11/6-11/8 - 11/6/2009
Another full weekend of NBA basketball is on tap, and in the early going, the major stories seem to be not about who’s doing what, but more about who’s not doing what. Through Thursday’s action, Cleveland & the Lakers are 2-9 ATS, and bankrolls are already bleeding because of it. Well, the Cavs will be in New York on Friday night, and Los Angeles faces two games over the next three days to try and get it turned around quickly. Let’s take a look at all of the key games on tap, as well as some of the top StatFox Power Trends to consider in your wagering action.

8. Betting the NFL best for the rest - 11/6/2009
Earlier in the season, on two different occasions, I spent time researching and finding reasons, then imploring you to not give up betting on some of the NFL’s worst teams. For that reason, I’ve decided to dedicate this week’s NFL feature piece to betting the good teams the rest of the way.

9. Early Season NBA Handicapping - 11/5/2009
If you’re like most bettors, you probably choose to tread lightly in the NBA & college basketball in November, instead choosing to invest your sports betting dollar in football. You probably believe that the season is so long, and that it takes awhile for the pro players to get going, thus accurately gauging the teams for their beginning strengths is difficult. However, you might be missing out on early season opportunities, since I personally believe that the NBA boasts the greatest continuity of any sports league, meaning the handicapper who sticks to basic fundamentals should have an advantage.

10. Dickies 500 Betting Preview - 11/6/2009
The Lone Star State hosts this weekend’s NASCAR events and with just three races remaining in the season, Jimmie Johnson is getting closer and closer to a fourth straight series title. His lead is currently 184-points over Mark Martin heading into the Dickies 500 at Texas Motor Speedway, and he needs to only finish 9th in each of the final three weeks to clinch. Well, his career average finish at Texas is 9.1, best on the circuit, so he is at least on target to meet his series clinching goal this week. However, surely Johnson has his sights set on Victory Lane, and he is a 13-4 favorite to win Sunday’s race.

11. NBA Top Weekend Power Trends 10/30-11/2 - 10/29/2009
It’s another full weekend of NBA basketball, with 13 games set for Friday, and seven for both Saturday and Sunday to close it out. If you haven’t been keep track, there have already been some significant developments in the season’s first three days. First and foremost on that list, Cleveland has started 0-2 as the Lebron-Shaq combo has not lived up to advanced billing. Elsewhere, the Southeast Division won four of its first five games, with Washington pulling an unlikely road upset at Dallas. One other team, Milwaukee, has yet to even take the court. All of the aforementioned teams will be in action this weekend. Here is a look at some of the games on tap along with our weekly feature highlighting Top StatFox Power Trends that should be in play.

12. NFL Pre- & Post-Bye Week Trends - Part 2 - 10/29/2009
The NFL “open dates” continue for another three weeks and if you’ve been around StatFox or the Platinum Sheet the last few seasons, you’ve probably been anxiously awaiting the second part of the series highlighting the top team trends for pre- and post-bye week games. Here is Part 2. If you missed any or all of the first part of the series, click here.

13. Talladega last hope for a competitive Chase - 10/28/2009
The AMP Energy 500 has been called the “wild card” in this year’s Chase, and for good reason, as anything can and usually does happen at Talladega Superspeedway. Frankly, NASCAR needs a wild card or two at this point, as Jimmie Johnson has turned the Chase into his own personal highlight reel again. For the first time in awhile though, he is not the favorite for Sunday’s race. That honor goes to Tony Stewart, who, at 7-1, leads only four drivers listed with single-digit prices.

14. Johnson biggest favorite of season at Martinsville - 10/24/2009
Halfway through the 2009 Chase, Jimmie Johnson is threatening to make his fourth straight Sprint Cup title a foregone conclusion. Not only has he won three of the Chase races to build a 90-point cushion over Mark Martin, but now the circuit is headed to Martinsville Speedway, where Johnson has won four of the five previous events in the COT. The only race in that span he didn’t win was a 4th place finish as well, so this doesn’t figure to be the week in which trailing contenders close the gap.

15. Key StatFox NFL Matchup Trends for Week 7 - 10/22/2009
With five or six games in the books for each NFL team in 2009, assumptions can begin to be made about each of the clubs. Some of them are obvious, other are not. Many characteristics of teams can simply be derived using stats. StatFox does this for use in its Matchup Power Trends. With that in mind, I’ve detailed some of the top angles that will be in play for the Week 7 NFL board.

16. 2009-10 NBA Season Betting Previews - 10/25/2009
Kobe & the Lakers finally got over the hump this past June, winning their first post-Shaq title while giving Phil Jackson his 10th championship ring by defeating the Magic in five games. While their fans were certainly excited, the rest of the NBA was left wondering what could have been from a potential matchup of Bryant versus Lebron James in the finals. Could that exciting matchup be in the cards for this upcoming June? Read on for a brief preview of the upcoming season, then be sure to click on the division links below for in-depth betting previews for each of the league's 30 teams.

23. Lowe's odds, Chase Standings in Parallel - 10/15/2009
The only night event in the ten-race Chase for the Sprint Cup” is scheduled for Saturday at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Concord, North Carolina. The NASCAR Banking 500 will be the second points race of the 2009 season at Lowe’s and the third event overall. With just six races remaining in the season, three-time defending series champ Jimmie Johnson is pacing the field by 72 points. Most frightening is that he is the favorite for this week’s race at 4-1 odds, boasting five wins, eight top-fives and 12 top-10s in 16 prior Lowe’s races. However, Mark Martin, Juan Montoya, Tony Stewart, and Jeff Gordon certainly aren’t ready to concede.

24. First check on StatFox Outplay Factor Ratings - 10/13/2009
It's about this time each football season StatFox Steve loves to dig into the database for both college & pro football and tabulate the Outplay Factor Ratings for each team. By now, all the clubs have at least four games in the books, meaning there is a decent idea as to how they stack up for 2009. However, as is always the case, there are teams that are overrated and teams that are underrated. Take a look as Steve goes through the current ratings and highlights some of the key things to watch for.

25. Are bad NFL teams worth the effort anymore? - 10/8/2009
It can be proven statistically that any team in the NFL that loses its first three games of a given season has very little chance to make the playoffs that year. Therefore, the postseason pool for 2009 apparently is down to just 25 teams now since there were seven clubs that were 0-3 after Week 3. Now, having seen the Week 4 games, you’re probably already to add a few other have-not’s to the list. Still, there are bad teams, and there are truly bad teams. Where does the separation come from, and are these teams worthy of your betting dollar anymore this season?
