27. Oddsmakers tuned in on AFL playoff scenarios - 6/21/2008 In all, eight remaining eligible teams will be trimmed down to six playoff qualifiers after the weekend of Arena Football is said and done. The other six spots are already filled, but plenty of sorting on seedings is yet to be determined as well. It should be an interesting couple of days. Most of the key action is packed on the Saturday slate, as all six games have some sort of playoff implications surrounding them, and oddsmakers have adjusted, or perhaps over-adjusted their pointspreads to reflect what's at stake. Here’s a look at three of those games from a betting perspective.

29. StatFox Dave examines Monday's AFL game - 6/16/2008 Playoff bound Arizona will host the Colorado Crush in this Monday Night ESPN football game. The Rattlers have won their last four games straight up and against the spread and will have little ambition to make this game a blowout as they have secured the home field and the number three seed during the open round of the playoffs. Does that make the Crush the play at +4.5 tonight? Not necessarily says StatFox Dave. Read on as he sits in for StatFox Doug and gives his thoughts on the Monday night Arena game.

30. A Professional Gambler's Take on the Tim Donaghy Scandal - 6/11/2008 Haralabos Voulgaris leads a rare life. He's one of very few people -- Voulgaris estimates there may be as few as four or five -- whose main source of income is betting on the NBA. And he does very well at it. "In the last eight years," he explains, "the 2004-2005 season was the only year where I didn't turn a nice profit, and I lost very small." His approach is intensively evidence-based. He has his own massive database that would be the envy of any stat geek.

31. Brown rhymes with Crown, as in Triple - 6/7/2008 >(Courtesy - Jay Privman, DRF.com) - When Big Brown breaks from the gate in the 140th Belmont Stakes on Saturday at Belmont Park, he will begin the longest and most demanding race he will ever be in. And if Big Brown is successful in adding the 1 1/2-mile Belmont to victories in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, he will become the 12th Triple Crown winner, and the first in 30 years. For bettors, the biggest question is whether or not getting 2-5 odds on this heavy favorite is worth the price. Visit our partners over at Daily Racing Form for all the latest breaking info.

32. Big Brown draws the rail - 6/4/2008 Big Brown, seeking to become the 12th winner of the Triple Crown, was assigned post 1 among a field of 10 3-year-olds in the $1 million Belmont Stakes, which will be run Saturday for the 140th time at Belmont Park.

33. Stanley Cup Game Six – Now What? - 6/3/2008 The Detroit Red Wings are playing a game they didn’t want to play, in a city where they don’t want to be, against a growing-confident Pittsburgh Penguins team they were certain would be long gone by now. Such are the perils of the Stanley Cup finals where, as the Red Wings discovered during a riveting but heartbreaking Game 5, no lead is truly safe and no team is safely eliminated until the final horn sounds. Fifty-eight minutes won’t do it.

34. Betting NBA Finals - Opinions Vary - 6/3/2008 The NBA Finals will start on Thursday in Boston and not unexpectedly, StatFox Steve and StatFox Doug see this series very differently. Since both have been very busy of late, making it impossible to get them together for a StatFox Scuffle, we thought we would throw questions at them about the Finals and let them share their feelings. Always insightful and never dull, here is what our guys had to say about crowning an NBA champion.

35. Big Brown Update before Belmont Stakes - 6/2/2008 Big Brown galloped 1 1/2 miles over Belmont Park's main track a couple of hours after hoof specialist Ian McKinlay replaced the stainless steel sutures in the quarter crack on the colt's left front foot. McKinlay said that it was just a routine change and it helped tighten things up around the quarter crack.

36. Dodgers and Mets Betting Preview for SNB - 6/1/2008 After a rough start, the New York Mets have a chance to end this week - along with their homestand - on a much more positive note. The Mets look to win consecutive series for the first time since mid-April, when they send ace Johan Santana to the mound to close a four-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday. Following a 3-6 road trip that sparked questions about manager Willie Randolph’s job security, New York (27-27, -6.2 units) opened this seven-game homestand with a 7-3 loss to the Marlins on Monday.

37. Giants try to stomp on Snakes for sweep - 5/29/2008 At the start of the San Francisco Giants’ nine-game road trip, two straight wins for Barry Zito and a sweep of the first-place Arizona Diamondbacks may have seemed like too much to ask for. But that’s just what the Giants will be seeking on Thursday, when they’ll look for their sixth win of the trip as Zito takes the hill against the struggling NL West leaders. Use the FREE FoxSheet as a guide for this contest in the desert.

38. Pittsburgh Makes Adjustments, still Underdog - 5/25/2008 The victorious Red Wings just want to tighten things up. The suddenly deflated Penguins are looking to shake it up. As much as the hockey world looked forward to finally getting Detroit and Pittsburgh on the ice to start the Stanley Cup finals, Game 2 could be even more intriguing. “We came out the way we should have and then we backed off a little bit,” Penguins defenseman Hal Gill said. “They played a level higher than we did. We can be effective against them if we play the way we’re supposed to.”

39. Bettors to decide if Spurs can make stand - 5/25/2008 All the Los Angeles Lakers have done is protect the home court. It’s how well they did it that has given the San Antonio Spurs reason to worry about protecting their own. “We got to really step up, especially starting with me, and try to get those two games at home,” San Antonio’s Manu Ginobili said after his team’s Game 2 loss on Friday. “It’s going to be really difficult because now they built confidence. They’re playing great, so it’s going to be even harder now. But we still believe.”

40. Home Favorite Penguins must avoid rough stuff - 5/17/2008 If the Pittsburgh Penguins don't realize the enviable position they're in, the large NHL standings board in the middle of their dressing room should tell them. Only two Eastern Conference teams are listed, with the conference finals results in bright red numbers: Penguins 3, Flyers 1. For the Penguins, its one victory to go to play for the Stanley Cup, a large picture of which also is displayed in their locker room. The black and white photo highlights the names of the 1991-92 Penguins, the last team in franchise history to play for, and win, the Cup.
|
41. Detroit Huge Favorites to Close Series - 5/16/2008 The Detroit Red Wings sound as if the Western Conference finals have lasted long enough. They're ready to eliminate the Dallas Stars on Saturday in Game 5 and earn a spot in the Stanley Cup finals for the first time since winning a title in 2002. "We want to finish them off as soon as we can," Detroit forward Tomas Holmstrom said Friday. "We want to take care of it right away.” The Stars, of course, hope to ruin the Red Wings' plans.
|
42. Cleveland Short-handed Favorite in Game 6 - 5/15/2008 It's do or summertime for the Cleveland Cavaliers. One more loss and a second straight Eastern Conference title is history. One more wins, and it's back to Chowder-land for Game 7. After squandering a 14-point lead at Boston in a hail of missed free throws and getting entangled by the Celtics' spiderweb-like defense in Game 5, LeBron James and his teammates are down 3-2 and facing elimination from the NBA playoffs on Friday night at Quicken Loans Arena.

43. Betting against Penguins makes no sense - 5/14/2008 A little more than two years ago, coach Michel Therrien, 11 games into his tenure behind the Pittsburgh Penguins bench, ripped his club for its evident indifference to defense. Now, one win away from the Stanley Cup finals, the hard-nosed taskmaster looks back fondly on the night his club bought into the rough message he sent. “When I came to Pittsburgh, the team was in last place,” Therrien said Wednesday. “When you’re in last place, there is a reason. They had good players, but the commitment, not only defensively, but the all-around commitment was not there.

44. Braves Deserved Road Underdogs - 5/14/2008 After a difficult start to their seven-game road trip thru Pennsylvania, the Atlanta Braves look to finish up the stretch on high note as they take on the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday. Atlanta (20-19, -2.9 units) has the worst road record in the majors at 6-15 (-11 units), all but negating its 14-4 home mark. The Braves dropped the first three games of this trip to extend their road losing streak to seven, but have won two of their last three contests, including an 8-6 victory over Philadelphia on Wednesday.

45. Spurs Betting Choice to stave off Elimination - 5/14/2008 Just as Tim Duncan and the San Antonio Spurs appeared to be hitting their stride and gaining momentum for a berth in the Western Conference finals, they are down again, their march toward consecutive NBA titles very much in doubt. The defending champions face elimination at the hands of the upstart New Orleans Hornets, who have a 3-2 lead in the conference semifinals, when they play Game 6 on Thursday.

46. 2008 WNBA Season Preview - 5/13/2008 A decade or so ago, the San Antonio Spurs went through a hellish NBA campaign as star David Robinson was lost to injury. The next year with top draft pick Tim Duncan in the fold, they enjoyed the league's best turnaround ever. Similar things are expected in the WNBA this year in Los Angeles, as star Lisa Leslie returns from maternity leave and is joined by college superstar Candace Parker. Despite going 10-24 in '07, the Sparks are favored to win the '08 title. Here's a look at Los Angeles, plus the other 13 teams heading into the season, which starts Saturday.

47. Lakers look to keep homecourt advantage - 5/14/2008 Kobe Bryant walked a bit gingerly as he emerged from the training area at Lakers headquarters to speak with reporters Tuesday, remaining on his feet since sitting is not a preferred option because of his sore lower back. “Quite a bit (of pain), but it’s a lot better than it was yesterday,” Bryant said with a smile—his mood clearly positive. “It’ll be fine.” Bryant tweaked his back in the opening minutes of Sunday’s 123-115 overtime loss at Utah that tied the Western Conference semifinals 2-2.

48. Underdog Dallas takes one more shot - 5/12/2008 Being down 3-0 in the Western Conference finals isn't even the worst part for the Dallas Stars. This is: Dallas has yet to lead the Detroit Red Wings for a single second in any game this series. How can the Stars fathom winning four straight games under those circumstances? They can't. Instead, players came away from practice Tuesday talking about playing for pride in Game 4 on Wednesday night, hoping merely to send the series back to Detroit for Game 5.
|
49. Hockey Bettors finicky about Philly - 5/12/2008 Philadelphia’s Danny Briere laughed off questions about officiating and whether Pittsburgh Penguins stars Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin get more calls than they deserve. He didn’t want to get too involved in criticism, especially now that the Philadelphia Flyers are down 2-0 to their cross-state rivals in the Eastern Conference finals. Briere took an elbow to the back of the head from Malkin in the second period of Sunday night’s 4-2 loss in Game 2 at Pittsburgh.

50. Almost No Magic Left for Orlando - 5/12/2008 Shortly after going down 3-1 in the second round, Orlando's point guard Jameer Nelson said the Magic would go on the road and beat Detroit to extend the series. "What am I supposed to do? Guarantee a loss?" Nelson asked Monday. "We've got to win the game. We have the confidence that we can do it. -"I believe it." The Pistons have heard their fair share of guarantees over the years, usually from teammate Rasheed Wallace, and they responded to Nelson's with a collective yawn.
