The PGA Tour heads to San Antonio this weekend for the Valero Texas Open, a tournament that has been going since 1922 and generally boasts a low-scoring victor with a score of 10-under par or better in eight of the past 10 events. Last year, Martin Laird pulled out his third career PGA Tour victory with a 14-under par score, capped off by a 9-under par 63 on Sunday. Let’s take a look at a few of the 144-player field that could make their way to the top of the leaderboard on this Par-72, 7,433-yard course this weekend. Golfers to WatchZach Johnson (15/1): Johnson has top-10 finishes in four of 10 PGA Tour events this season, including two victories. He has had tremendous success hitting the green in regulation (72.0%, 10th on tour) and putting (1.73 per hole, 13th on tour) leading to a scoring average of 69.76 (9th on tour.) Although he has not placed better than 16th over his past four events, he certainly has the ability to score low and earn his third victory of the season here. Ryan Palmer (23/1): Palmer has come up short twice already this season as the runner-up in the Humana Challenge and also in his most recent tourney; the Honda Classic. He has been long off the tee this year (300.2 yards per, 16th on tour) leading to a 57.29% success rate at scoring a birdie or better on Par-5’s this season, the third best percentage on the PGA Tour. Palmer will be looking to win his first event since 2010 this weekend. Kevin Na (40/1): Na has been all over the place this year, placing in the top-20 in 6-of-11 events but also missing the cut three times. He has done well putting, ranking 17th overall in strokes gained from putting (.611) and is currently 12th in the FedEx Cup standings. Na is having his best season of his career and could be in line for his second PGA victory against a fairly shallow field in San Antonio. Charley Hoffman (25/1): Hoffman placed third at this tournament last year and 13th in 2012, so he knows his way around the course. He has also been strong this season, getting into the top-9 in three of 10 events and hitting 70.5% of greens in regulation (23rd on Tour.) Hoffman should be considered a darkhorse candidate to top the leaderboard with his favorable 25-to-1 odds.
