In the wake of an exciting PLAYERS Championship, the PGA heads out to Texas for the HP Byron Nelson Championship, appropriately named after its first winner in 1944. The tourney has been played exclusively at the Par-70, 7,166-yard TPC course since 2008, and has seen some big names (Adam Scott, Jason Day, Keegan Bradley) win since that time. Last year, Sang-Moon Bae won his first and only PGA event, shooting 13-under to defeat Keegan Bradley, who matched a course record of 60 in the first round. This season has brought a new wave of players to the forefront as names like Jordan Spieth, Patrick Reed and Jimmy Walker are topping the headlines instead of Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Rory McIlroy. Let’s take a look at a few players who could make a push at a win this weekend. Golfers to WatchJordan Spieth (10/1): Spieth is one of the most exciting young players on the PGA Tour, and is coming off a fourth-place finish at The PLAYERS Championship as a 20-year-old. He has yet to earn a victory this year, but has been in the top-5 five times and was the runner-up at The Masters. Spieth is ranked 130th in driving accuracy (59%) but has an amazing ability to scramble from the rough, being successful 68.09% of the time (3rd on tour). Matt Kuchar (12/1): It is hard to bet against Kuchar at the moment, as he has been in the top-5 in four of his past five tournaments, including a victory at the RBC Heritage. Overall on the season, he has finished in the top-10 in 9-of-13 events while having the second-best scoring average on tour this season (69.58). It would come as no surprise to see Kuchar topping the leaderboard once again this week. Keegan Bradley (20/1): Bradley has been struggling of late, missing the cut in both The Masters and the PLAYERS, but was the runner-up here last season, which included an amazing 60 in the first round. He is one of the few players that has a better than par score (-1) over the season on Par-3’s, ranking him 11th overall on the PGA Tour. Despite his recent struggles, Bradley has placed in the top-20 nine times in his first 14 events this year and should factor in on Sunday afternoon. Martin Kaymer (18/1): Kaymer jumped from 61st to 28th in the World Rankings with his win at the PLAYERS Championship and has steadily been improving over his past four tournaments. He had not won on the PGA Tour since the PGA Championship back in 2010, but the former number-one golfer in the world currently ranks fourth in total driving this season, a stat that measures how well a player does off the tee in both accuracy and distance, which could help him win back-to-back events this weekend. Rory Sabbatini (65/1): Sabbatini has placed in the top-10 in two of his past four events and won this tournament back in 2009 by two strokes over Brian Davis. He has not done well here since his win, but with solid recent play lately, he could be a longshot to return to his former glory at this TPC course.
