The Open Championship Prop Bets

Tees Off: Thursday, July 17
Royal Liverpool Golf Club – Merseyside, England

The latest DraftKings contest is for the British Open on Thursday, July 17.

For a mere $2.00 entry fee, participants have a chance to win a $1,500 first prize. The top 2,300 entrants will be paid in cash, and first-time depositors at DraftKings receive a 100% bonus up to $600. The drafting style is salary-cap based where you have $50,000 to spend on six golfers.

The British Open begins on Thursday. Below are some of our favorite prop bets to play for the third major of the season.

Top American: Zach Johnson (+1400)
The favorites as far as Americans go are Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, both at +900, but each player is having issues with either injuries or specific parts of their game this season and look to poor value plays to be truly competitive come Sunday. The others with more favorable odds than Zach Johnson (Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth, Matt Kuchar, Rickie Fowler) have combined for zero major championship victories over their career, but Zach Johnson has one major under his belt and has placed in the top-9 in three of the past seven majors. He has not placed worse than 16th at the Open Championship since 2010 and has been improving each year. Johnson is coming off a runner-up finish last week at the John Deere Classic and will bring that momentum into a solid performance this week.

Top 10 Finish: Henrik Stenson (+200)
Stenson has always been a great competitor at the Open Championship, placing in the top-3 in three of the past five years. He has not finished worse than 21st over his past six majors and has top-25 finishes 16 times over his 33 career majors. Stenson has the mental ability and technical skill to perform well against the toughest competition and should be near the top of the leaderboard throughout this tournament.

Phil Mickelson to Make the Cut: No (+325)
Mickelson was the winner at this tourney last year, but has not been playing the same type of golf since, especially in majors. After the Open win, he placed 72nd at the PGA Championship, missed the cut at The Masters and finished 28th at the US Open; all underwhelming performances. Mickelson has yet to make a top-10 yet this year and has actually missed the cut three times already. His amazing ability with the wedge has not been able to overcome his decline in putting, as he ranks 109th on tour in strokes gained putting (-.010). Mickelson could have a few more surprises in him, but he is not playing well at the moment and could fall off early at the championship.

Top Englishman: Danny Willett (+1200)
This will be a risky pick, but the payout is worth it, as the 26-year-old Willett has been playing at a very high level this year with top-11 finishes in his past three starts on the European Tour. This local did great at the British Open last year, finishing tied for 15th in his second attempt at the event. He has hit 70.8% of greens in regulation through 16 tournaments on the European Tour this season, a number that would place him in the top-4 on the PGA Tour. Again, this is a longshot pick, but youngsters have been huge in 2014, and Willett should be on a high in front of many of his fellow countrymen.

Top Australian: Adam Scott (-120)
Let’s finish off with a safer bet, as Adam Scott is a clear favorite among Australian-born players, yet is getting nearly even odds. Scott has won a tournament already this year while placing in the top-25 in 9-of-10 events. He’s been dominant in majors as well, finishing in the top-15 in nine of his past 10 starts. The only real competitor for this spot would be Jason Day, who is coming off a poor showing at the Quicken Loans National where he shot 4-over par and failed to make the cut. Scott is a favorite to take down his second career major and keep his distance from any other Aussies.
