The Ohio State Buckeyes won the first ever College Football Playoff and it’s time to start looking at who will win it next year. Below are a few teams that are worth keeping an eye on:

Ohio State (15-to-4) - The Buckeyes are the favorites to win the National Championship and they are every bit deserving. Ohio State is returning 14 starters from the team that won a year ago. Perhaps the biggest knock on this team is that it has three quarterbacks that are all capable of competing for the Heisman Trophy and it can’t decide which one will begin the year as the starter. That’s a pretty good problem to have considering there are teams that are still without a capable starter at football’s most important position. Whoever wins the job out of camp will have the luxury of handing the ball off to RB Ezekiel Elliott, who gives this team a fourth player that could be considered the nation’s top player by the end of the season. The odds aren’t favorable for this team to win it all, but they also aren’t terrible and Urban Meyer’s group is so good that it is worth placing a few units on in the early going.

USC (17-to-1) - The Trojans won nine games in Steve Sarkisian’s first season with the team and he’ll return 16 starters from that talented bunch. QB Cody Kessler is back under center and if it weren’t for Marcus Mariota then Kessler would have been the talk of the Pac-12 last season. Not only will USC be bringing back a lot of its talent, but the school also reeled in the No. 1 recruiting class in the country in the offseason. The Trojans are going to be stocked with impact players this season and will likely end up in the College Football Playoff when all is said and done. There aren’t many teams with the potential that USC has this upcoming season and at 17-to-1, they are definitely worth making a play on.

Michigan State (25-to-1) - Michigan State only lost two games last season and those were against Ohio State and Oregon, and both were in the College Football Playoff. This team was excellent on both sides of the football in 2014, finishing in the top-25 in both points for and points against. Defense was the team’s true strength though and the Spartans will be returning a number of starters from what was a dominant unit last season. The Spartans will also get back QB Connor Cook on offense and he is one of the early favorites to be the top quarterback off the board in the 2016 NFL Draft. Mark Dantonio has been one of the best head coaches in the country for years now and he should be able to maximize the talent of what is a pretty experienced group. The Spartans are worth placing a unit or two on.

Mississippi State (65-to-1) The Bulldogs are a dark horse to win the National Championship this year, as they return the least amount of starters of any teams in the SEC. The important thing, however, is that they return QB Dak Prescott. With Prescott under center, this team is going to be able to put up points no matter who is surrounding him. He accounted for 4,435 total yards and 41 total touchdowns on the season in 2014 and will only be better as a passer with another year under his belt. The defense is the main question mark as a lot of its success will rely on the play of the Bulldogs’ young players. If it can be an above-average unit then this team will be competitive in every game it plays. At 65-to-1 this team is worth placing one unit on strictly because of the talent of Prescott.
