at BOSTON RED SOX (39-31)

First pitch: Wednesday, 7:10 p.m. ET
Line: Chicago +110, Boston -120, Total: 9.5

Chicago will look to complete the sweep when the White Sox close out the series with the Red Sox on Wednesday.

The White Sox have fell off from their hot start to the season. On May 9 they had a six-game lead in the division, but today they are in fourth place and 5.5 games back of the division leader. Chicago came into the series after getting swept by the Indians, but has rallied to win the first two games of the series. Both wins were 3-1 games, but Monday’s game had to be settled in the 10th inning. With a win tonight, the White Sox won’t just sweep the series, but they will also get back to playing .500 baseball. They will have LHP Jose Quintana (5-7, 2.63 ERA, 87 K) on the mound to try and get the win. Boston has been struggling as of late, only winning two of the last six games. The Red Sox are still right in the hunt for the AL East, only being one game behind the Orioles for the division lead. The Red Sox will look to avoid the sweep with LHP Eduardo Rodriguez (1-2, 6.92 ERA, 12 K) on the mound. It’s interesting to note that Chicago has had success in Boston over the last three seasons, going 7-3 at Fenway.

Tonight’s starter for the White Sox, Jose Quintana, has pitched well against the Red Sox in his career. He has gone 3-0 with a 1.94 ERA in career games when facing Boston. His last start against Boston came in early May, when he threw a great eight innings and only let up one run. Recently, however, he has struggled, going 0-2 with a 4.42 ERA over the last three games. To his credit, in his last two starts he has lasted at least 7.2 innings and gave up at-most three runs, but didn’t get much run support from his team. Chicago’s hitting has not been a strength this season. The White Sox don’t have one hitter batting over .300 for the year and they are 23rd in runs-scored. 3B Todd Frazier (.200, 20 HR, 45 RBI) has been having a great year hitting for power though. He’s been struggling at the plate over the last seven days, only hitting .118 but should be able to turn it around soon. OF Adam Eaton (.277, 3 HR, 22 RBI) has been hitting well over the last seven days, going .320 at the plate. The key for the White Sox is to not waste another good outing from Quintana on Wednesday.

Tonight could be Eduardo Rodriguez’s last chance to prove himself as a worthy starter for Boston. Rodriguez suffered a knee injury in spring training that kept him out until the end of May. Ever since, he has made four mediocre starts. He owns a 0-2 record with an 8.59 ERA in his home starts. His last start came last Thursday when he gave up five runs over 4.1 innings. After the game he had a meeting that was described as “tense” with the manger, pitching coach, and president of baseball operations. Expect a short leash if the outing tonight doesn’t start well. Boston will hope to provide enough runs to take the pressure off Rodriguez. The Sox have been the top run-scoring team in the league (392), but have struggled recently, ranked 24th in runs scored over the last seven days. This is one of the reasons for their recent downturn. Boston will look to SS Xander Bogaerts (.347, 9 HR, 46 RBI) to have a big game. Also look for DH David Ortiz (.339, 18 HR, 59 RBI) to keep his hot hitting going in his final season tonight, as he is hitting .348 with two homers over the last seven days.
