The Giants will be hoping to end their trip to Boston with a victory at Fenway on Wednesday.

Both the Giants and the Red Sox are serious contenders this season and both teams will be looking to earn a statement victory in this matchup on Wednesday. This series could very well be a preview of the World Series and both teams want to show that they have what it takes to win it all on the national stage. Another thing that should make this game a very exciting one to watch is that LHP Drew Pomeranz (8-7, 2.47 ERA, 115 K) will be making his debut for the Red Sox. Boston gave up a top prospect in order to acquire the lefty and his first task with the team will be to outduel RHP Matt Cain (1-5, 5.34 ERA, 41 K) on Wednesday. The Sox picked a very good day for Pomeranz to start, as he is familiar with the Giants’ lineup and that should make him a bit more comfortable. The expectation is also that he will not need to be at his absolute best in this game, as Cain has had a miserable season in San Francisco so far.

Matt Cain is going to be on the mound for the Giants and he will be hoping to have a very strong second half of the year for the team. Cain really struggled at the start of the season for San Francisco, but he was a bit better heading into the All-Star break and has now allowed just seven earned runs over his past 26.1 innings of work. If he can put forth something close to a quality start in this game then the Giants would be extremely satisfied. Cain’s control will come a long way in determining the outcome of this contest, as he walked five batters in his last start and can’t afford to do that again on Wednesday. Offensively, the guy to really keep an eye on is C Buster Posey. Posey has gotten the best of Pomeranz in his career, going 6-for-13 with two homers and three RBI against the lefty. Outside of Posey, not many guys have had much success against him though. The Giants will need a few bats to step it up in this one or it could be a long night.

Drew Pomeranz will be making his Red Sox debut on Wednesday and there are a lot of reasons to expect a very good outing in this one. In his most recent two starts against the Giants, Pomeranz allowed just two earned runs in 13.0 innings of work. He allowed just six hits in those games and will be hoping for a similar outcome in this one. One thing that will be working in his favor in Boston is that the team should be able to provide him with a lot more run support. The Red Sox have scored the most runs in the league coming into this game and that will help Pomeranz moving forward. Offensively, two guys to watch out for are 1B Hanley Ramirez and 3B Aaron Hill. The two of them are a combined 22-for-79 with three homers and eight RBI against Cain in their careers. They could provide a major spark for Boston by producing in this one, as they are not even amongst the team’s most dangerous hitters.
