CHICAGO CUBS (103-58)

at CLEVELAND INDIANS (94-67)

First pitch: Tuesday, 8:00 p.m. ET
Line: Chicago -105, Cleveland -105, Total: 7.0

In one of the most highly-anticipated World Series in recent memory, the Cubs and the Indians kick off the 2016 Fall Classic in Cleveland.

It’s a dream World Series, and someone has to win it, as improbable as that may seem. In the coming days, one fan base will finally celebrate, and another’s misery will continue. The Cubs (103-58), who defeated the Giants in the NLDS and the Dodgers in the NLCS to get here, haven’t won it all since 1908, and are in the World Series for the first time since 1945. The Indians (94-67), who rolled past the Red Sox and the Blue Jays in the first two rounds, won their last title back in 1948. Because the American League won the All-Star Game, Game 1 is in Cleveland, and ace RHP Corey Kluber (18-9, 3.14 during the regular season) will get the start for manager Terry Francona. He’ll be opposed by Cubs LHP Jon Lester (19-5, 2.44 ERA during the regular season). In three starts this postseason (his first career playoff starts), Kluber is 2-1 with a 0.98 ERA (2 ER on 13 H in 18 1/3 IP). Lester has also been brilliant in three postseason starts, going 2-0 with a 0.86 ERA (2 ER on 14 H in 21 IP). The Cubs might get a boost from LF Kyle Schwarber (0-for-4 during the regular season), but Joe Maddon can’t expect much from him considering the slugger last played on April 7. Indians 2B Jason Kipnis (5-for-30, 2 HR, 4 RBI) sprained his ankle celebrating the Indians’ pennant, but he is expected to be ready for Game 1. The Cubs and Indians didn’t square off in the regular season.

C Willson Contreras (8-for-20, HR, 4 RBI) has been one of the unsung heroes for the Cubs, and IF Javier Baez (13-for-38, 4 2B, HR, 7 RBI) and 3B Kris Bryant (13-for-39, 5 2B, HR, 6 RBI) have led Chicago’s offense. Star 1B Anthony Rizzo (9-for-40, 2 2B, 2 HR, 5 RBI) and SS Addison Russell (7-for-37, 2B, 2 HR, 4 RBI) have each hit a pair of homers. The Cubs have seen very little of Kluber, and they haven’t had much success against him. 2B Ben Zobrist (6-for-36, 3 2B, 3 RBI) is 1-for-13 against him and CF Dexter Fowler (11-for-42, 4 2B, HR, 4 RBI) is 0-for-7 with five strikeouts. In 19 career postseason appearances (17 starts) over 119 IP, Lester is 8-6 with a 2.50 ERA.

SS Francisco Lindor (10-for-31, 2 2B, 2 HR, 4 RBI) might not be a household name, but he’s certainly turned plenty of heads this postseason. Kipnis, OF Coco Crisp (3-for-14, 2 HR, 3 RBI) and DH Carlos Santana (5-for-29, 2 HR, 2 RBI) have also homered twice this postseason, and Francona will need RF Lonnie Chisenhall (7-for-26, HR, 4 RBI) and 3B Jose Ramirez (6-for-27, 2B, RBI) to get hot. LF Rajai Davis (0-for-12, RBI) has hit Lester very well, going 14-for-46 with a homer, three doubles and three triples, and 1B Mike Napoli (5-for-28, 3 2B, HR, 2 RBI) has six hits in 10 at-bats—including two homers, a double and five RBIs—against his former batterymate. In one career start against the Cubs, last August, Kluber held Chicago to one earned run in 7 2/3 innings.
