SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly is preaching patience for his struggling defense.

Kelly says he is seeing signs of improvement for the Fighting Irish defense, that so far this year has looked nothing like the squad that led the Fighting Irish into the national championship game a season ago.

The 22nd-ranked Fighting Irish (2-1) are giving up 23.5 points and 411 yards. Even worse, two of their opponents they've face - Temple (0-3) and Purdue (1-2) - rank among the 30 least productive offenses in the nation.

Kelly says the Irish are still figuring themselves out, saying they are adjusting to a new middle linebacker and a new safety. He says the Irish have struggled in communication because of that. But he says he saw signs of hope in the 31-24 victory over Purdue on Saturday night.
