FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) - Arkansas has experienced a defensive surge under first-year coach Bret Bielema, ranking sixth in the country in total defense after three weeks.

The Razorbacks (3-0) will find out just how far their defense has come on Saturday when they travel to face Rutgers.

Led by senior defensive end Chris Smith, who is tied for the lead nationally with 4.5 sacks, Arkansas has held its first three opponents to an average of 253 yards per game.

Last season, under interim coach John L. Smith, the Razorbacks allowed an average of 409.9 yards per game - finishing 4-8 and missing a bowl game for the first time since the 2008 season.

The Scarlet Knights (2-1) had 525 yards of total offense in a 35-26 win over Arkansas last season.
