SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - New Notre Dame defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder says it is too early to say what kind of defense the Fighting Irish will run next season.
He says his experience tells him the key is to evaluate talent first, then decide on a defense. When he was introduced as the defensive coordinator at Auburn two years ago, VanGorder described himself as a ''4-3 guy.'' But Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly, who didn't take any questions at a news conference Tuesday, has said he was looking for a coordinator who would keep the Irish in a base 3-4 defense that can switch into a 4-3.
Kelly says he was looking for a defensive coordinator who was a great teacher, saying VanGorder's experience helps him understand the need for player development.
