NEW YORK (AP) - Geno Smith is unfazed by the New York Jets not committing to him as their starting quarterback for next season, adding that Rex Ryan ''knows how to push my buttons.''
Smith's up-and-down rookie season ended with four solid games as the Jets finished 8-8, but missed the playoffs.
Both Ryan and general manager John Idzik have said that while Smith improved, they would wait until they see who's on the roster before considering their starter. Smith had 12 touchdown passes and 21 interceptions.
Smith, handing out ice cream during a promotion for New Era caps Friday, is expected to be in the mix whether the Jets sign a veteran or draft someone to compete with him. He says he'll go into the season ''with a chip on my shoulder.''
