COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina signed a recruiting class heavy on defense and the in-state players that have helped the Gamecocks to their most successful seasons in history.
South Carolina signed four defensive linemen and four cornerbacks, spots where the Gamecocks are especially thin. They took defensive tackle Dexter Wideman, who was leaning toward Florida State and cornerback Chris Lammons, who was seriously considering Wisconsin.
Coach Steve Spurrier's class again wasn't impressive in the national rankings - failing to crack the top 20. But Spurrier said the Gamecocks have been successful instead in the fall, going 11-2 three straight seasons.
South Carolina will have to find a way to fit 21 players into a small number of spots. The team had just five seniors and lost four juniors to the NFL draft.
