Despite No. 5 ranking, nothing coming easy so far for Wisconsin

MADISON, Wis. - Travis Beckum has a scary thought about the Badgers.

They could score more. A lot more.

Beckum broke out with 10 receptions for 132 yards and a touchdown in No. 5 Wisconsin's 37-34 victory over Michigan State in a Big Ten shootout Saturday between previously undefeated teams.

``We definitely could've put up a lot more points,'' Beckum said. ``We can be satisfied with what we had, but there's definitely room for improvement.''

Wisconsin (5-0, 2-0) got a bump up to No. 5 in the rankings, thanks to a weekend in which five Top 10 teams collapsed. The Badgers have the nation's longest winning streak at 14 games, but the defense remains a concern after allowing 564 yards.

The unit gave up single plays of 53, 70 and 80 yards to the Spartans (4-1, 0-1).

``Mainly, we didn't do our job,'' Badgers cornerback Allen Langford said. ``We didn't go out there and execute like we should have. We didn't contain the ball. We got out-leveraged a lot of times. A lot of guys were missing assignments.''

Spartans coach Mark Dantonio couldn't give Michigan State its first 5-0 start since 1999. Now he'll have a tougher task - convincing the fans that the Spartans won't revert to the recent past, in which they have lost 14 of their last 16 conference games.

``It's disappointing when you have a close game like this and you come in feeling like you can win the game,'' Dantonio said. ``We have to live with the fact we could have been a 5-0 team. We'll just have to move forward.''

The Spartans certainly have a lot to fall back on. Their power and finesse running backs - Jehuu Caulcrick and Javon Ringer - had impressive days.

The 255-pound Caulcrick ran for two scores and 73 yards, while Ringer had 145 yards on 10 carries. Ringer also caught seven passes for 88 yards, but the one he couldn't come down with cost the Spartans. Ringer was hung up in the backfield trying to make a catch on fourth-and-2 to keep Michigan State's final drive alive with just over a minute to play.

``When we really needed to make plays, they didn't really happen,'' Ringer said. ``I still feel like we showed we can compete with anybody, but we still need to get better.''

Quarterback Brian Hoyer didn't criticize the play calling, even though the Spartans ran the ball on third-and-7 with 3:23 left that resulted in a missed 53-yard field goal before their final drive.

``There was still quite a bit of time,'' Hoyer said. ``The way we'd pounded the ball, I thought we could pound it again and run some clock and score at the same time.''

Hoyer finished 22-of-36 for 323 yards with two touchdowns, but he was also sacked five times and fumbled once.

``We're not going to let this ruin our season, like it has in years past,'' Hoyer said.

The Badgers have narrowly avoided having the season ruined by winning their ninth straight conference game. Wisconsin's first two wins in the Big Ten have come by a field goal each, and the Badgers will go on the road to play Illinois next.

``It's all about finding ways to win, that's our mind-set,'' said Tyler Donovan, who finished 17-of-24 for 247 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.

Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema decided early in the week that he wanted Beckum more involved in the offense. While Bielema said he forgot his socks on Saturday, he didn't forget about his pass-catching tight end.

Donovan found Beckum nine times before halftime.

``It's a good feeling when you see Travis one-on-one. You know he can exploit it,'' Donovan said. ``He won in some key situations.''

P.J. Hill also ran for 155 yards on 34 carries and Wisconsin held the ball for more than 34 minutes. While Beckum said he felt the Badgers haven't been given credit for what they've accomplished so far, Donovan disagreed.

``Disrespected? There's different levels of it,'' Donovan said. ``The special thing about this team, we're not really worried about the outside stuff. It's just about winning football games. That's all I really care about it and I think things will take care of themselves.''
