BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) -Bill Lynch will remain Indiana's football coach under a new four-year contract.

Lynch was the Hoosiers' interim coach this season following the death of Terry Hoeppner from complications of a brain tumor. Lynch guided the Hoosiers to a 7-5 record and the team is expected to receive its first bowl bid since 1993.

``Bill Lynch and his staff showed great leadership under trying circumstances,'' athletic director Rick Greenspan said in a statement. ``We are confident that the program can achieve consistent success under Bill's leadership.''

Lynch's contract runs through July 1, 2012. Terms of the deal were not released.

Lynch had been offensive coordinator and assistant head coach during Hoeppner's two years as coach and was the temporary replacement during his medical absences, including two games last season after Hoeppner underwent a second surgery.

Indiana chose Lynch as coach for the 2007 season on June 15, four days before Hoeppner's death.

Lynch had an 81-67-3 record in 14 seasons as coach at Ball State, Butler and DePauw and helped coach the Hoosiers quarterbacks in 1993 and 1994. He returned to Indiana after Hoeppner was hired.

The Hoosiers finished the regular season with their most wins since 1993, reached bowl eligibility for the first time since 1994 and won its first Old Oaken Bucket game over Purdue since 2001.
