LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) -Clint Bowen, who spent the past two years as co-defensive coordinator with Bill Young at Kansas, will have the job to himself next season.

Young was hired away by Miami after being a finalist the award given to the top assistant coach in college football. He helped the Jayhawks to a 12-1 record, including a victory over Virginia Tech in the Orange Bowl.

The 35-year-old Bowen will be one of the youngest coordinators in major college football.

``Clint has played a big role in the success of our defense,'' coach Mark Mangino said earlier this week. ``He has great rapport with the players and is an outstanding teacher of schemes and fundamentals. There is no doubt Clint will continue to develop our defense.''

Bowen was a defensive back at Kansas in 1992-93 and returned to the Jayhawks in 1998 as a graduate assistant.
