DALLAS (AP) -Former Kansas City Chiefs coach Frank Gansz, who has been out of football since 2001, was hired to coach special teams at SMU on Wednesday.

Gansz brings 37 years of experience to new SMU coach June Jones' staff.

Under Gansz, who turns 70 in November, the Chiefs were 4-11 in the strike year of 1987 and 4-11-1 in 1988, when he was replaced by Marty Schottenheimer. Gansz had been promoted to head coach after one season in charge of the Chiefs' special teams.

The other NFL stops for Gansz, mostly as a special teams coach, included Jacksonville, San Francisco, Cincinnati, Philadelphia, Detroit and St. Louis, where he helped the Rams win a Super Bowl in 2000.

Before his NFL coaching career, Gansz had college coaching stints at Air Force, Colgate, Navy, Oklahoma State, Army and UCLA.
