FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) -Dismissed Arkansas linebacker Freddie Fairchild faces new criminal charges after police say he ran from an officer and threw away a bag of marijuana.

Fairchild, 22, of Little Rock is charged with possession of a controlled substance and fleeing after his arrest just after midnight Sunday.

A report by Fayetteville police states an officer arrived at an apartment complex near the university after receiving a noise complaint. The officer smelled burnt marijuana and shone a light on a crowd of people gathered near a car.

The report alleges Fairchild began walking away and started running when the officer told him to stop. The report says the officer caught up with Fairchild after he tripped on bushes.

The officer reported finding a bag with 3 grams of marijuana inside it along the path Fairchild ran.

Fairchild was released just before 3 p.m. Sunday from the Washington County jail after posting a $1,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear Aug. 25 in Fayetteville District Court.

A telephone number for Fairchild could not be immediately found Sunday.

In March, Fayetteville police arrested Fairchild for battery following a report by a woman that he had attacked her. A preliminary probable-cause statement from a Fayetteville police detective said that Fairchild caused injuries to the woman's ``head, face, extremities and pelvis'' and that ``he would not allow her to leave for several hours.''

Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino dismissed Fairchild from the Razorbacks' football team in June. He had been suspended from the team since his arrest.

The junior started 11 games last season as a sophomore. He led the Razorbacks with 4.5 sacks. He also forced one fumble, recovered one and was third on the team with 92 tackles.

Six football players on the team have faced problems with the law this year.
