BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) - California quarterback Zach Maynard is not starting the season opener against Nevada because he missed a tutoring appointment earlier in the summer.

Cal made the announcement shortly before kickoff on Saturday. Maynard is expected to play in the first game at the renovated Memorial Stadium.

Allan Bridgford will start in Maynard's place against the Wolf Pack.
