MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Minnesota backup quarterback Max Shortell has decided to transfer to another school following freshman Philip Nelson's takeover of the position.

Coach Jerry Kill said Tuesday that he respects the Kansas native's choice and ``will help him in any way'' he can.

Shortell started two games last season when MarQueis Gray was injured. He threw three touchdown passes in relief of Gray against Western Michigan on Sept. 15 and started three more games while Gray was hurt, but the sophomore was picked off three times at Iowa on Sept. 29 and injured against Northwestern on Oct. 13. Nelson got the job the following week.

Shortell has thrown for eight touchdowns, seven interceptions and a 54 percent completion rate in his career.
