TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) - Indiana State has hired Mike Sanford as its head football coach.

The school sent out a news release announcing the hiring Friday and is planning to formally introduce Sanford next week. He replaces Trent Miles, who left after a third straight winning season to take the job at Georgia State on Nov. 30.

Sanford spent this season as Utah State's assistant head coach and was in charge of running backs and tight ends and helped lead the No. 18 Aggies to the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl on Saturday against Toledo. He was Utah's offensive coordinator in 2003 and 2004 on Urban Meyer's staff, then was UNLV head coach from 2005-09. He was the offensive coordinator at Louisville in 2010 and 2011.
