PITTSBURGH (AP) - A handful of Pitt football recruits are getting a head start on their college careers.

Quarterback Tra'Von Chapman, tight end Scott Orndoff and defensive lineman Shakir Soto graduated from high school a semester early and are already taking classes, months ahead of the rest of Pitt's incoming recruits.

Chapman says he made the decision more than a year ago to skip the last four months of high school so he could get to Pitt early. Chapman's final day as a high schooler was Jan. 4. He drove from his home in Kent, Ohio to Pittsburgh the next day and began taking classes on Monday.

Chapman said he's just trying to get settled in before spring practice begins in March but hopes to be part of the open quarterback competition when training camp opens in the summer.
