CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) - After a 2-10 season it's safe to say change is expected for Illinois football as spring practices begin Tuesday.

Illini coach Tim Beckman has turned over much of his staff. A key addition is offensive coordinator Bill Cubit. Cubit was fired as head coach at Western Michigan but brings a track record of offensive success.

Cubit said Monday that he gives returning starter Nathan Scheelhaase an edge at quarterback but expects backup Reilly O'Toole to push him.

Defensive coordinator Tim Banks says he'll tweak some things based on the players he has, but he doesn't plan drastic changes in a scheme he ran with success at Cincinnati.

Illinois will close spring practices. The annual spring game is scheduled for April 12 in Champaign.
