This College World Series finale is equivalent to matching two six seeds for the NCAA basketball tournament championship. Maybe that is a bit of a reach, but of the last eight teams to make Omaha, the two longest shots at Sportsbook.com to make the best-of-three championship were Georgia and Fresno State at 12-1 odds. Tonight they’ll start a most unlikely final.

Georgia (44-23-1) did come into 64-team draw nationally ranked at eighth, being SEC regular season champions. After battling through Regional and Super Regional play, they drew top-seeded Miami-Fl and shocked the Hurricanes 7-4 in opening game, of which they never recovered. The Bulldogs took down Stanford twice and comes into finals with an extra day of rest and 3-0 record in Nebraska.

Fresno State (45-30) is about as unlikely participant as one could imagine. These Bulldogs proved their toughness winning difficult Long Beach Regional and had to win last two games at Arizona State against the Sun Devils just to advance. An offensive explosion of 17 runs burned Rice; however beating number two North Carolina got everyone’s attention. They lost first rematch Saturday on late Tar Heels home run, but conquered them 6-1 Sunday to advance
.
Georgia is a -125 opening game favorite bringing a rested staff with Trevor Holder and Nick Montgomery at the front of the rotation and All-American closer Josh Fields to finish games off. Fresno State coach Mike Batesole hopes to steal one game trying to get to Justin Miller for Game Three finale.

Georgia has the better offense, led by shortstop Gordon Beckham and a host of talented hitters. Fresno State has delivered more clutch hits in the College World Series than a record label and would prefer lower scoring contests, since they are the better defensive team.

Georgia certainly holds all the edges, more rested, better overall hitting and pitching, and more experience against big time competition. Nevertheless, Fresno State has proven a viable competitor and with the way this college World Series has played out, anything goes.

ESPN2 has the coverage starting at 7 Eastern.
