CHICAGO CUBS (103-58)

at SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS (87-75)

First pitch: Monday, 9:30 p.m. ET
Line: Chicago +115, San Francisco -125, Total: 6.0

Down 2-0 and on the brink of elimination, the Giants head home for Game 3 as the Cubs look to advance to the NLCS.

The Cubs (103-58) came into the postseason as the World Series favorites, and they’ve played like it so far in the National League Division Series. Joe Maddon’s club took Game 1, 1-0, and Game 2, 5-2. Now the Giants (87-75), who defeated the Mets in the National League Wild Card Game last week, are looking to keep their every-other-year streak alive—they won it all in 2010, 2012 and 2014—at AT&T Park. They have the right man on the mound in LHP Madison Bumgarner, one of the greatest postseason pitchers of all time. In the Wild Card Game last week, Bumgarner—who went 15-9 with a 2.74 ERA during the regular season—was brilliant, tossing a complete-game shutout at Citi Field. The Cubs will look to sweep Bruce Bochy’s team behind RHP Jake Arrieta (18-8, 3.10 ERA this season). During the regular season, the Cubs took six of nine from the Giants, though San Francisco took two of three at AT&T Park. The Cubs posted a 46-34 road mark during the regular season. The Giants went 45-36 at home.

Only eight combined runs have been scored through the first 18 innings of this series, and many more aren’t expected to be pushed across on Monday. Only IF Javier Baez (3-for-6, 1 HR), 3B Kris Bryant (2-for-7, 2B) and C Wilson Contreras (2-for-3) have more than one hit through the first two games. 2B Ben Zobrist (1-for-7), CF Dexter Fowler (1-for-7, 2B), RF Jason Heyward (1-for-7, 2B) and 1B Anthony Rizzo (0-for-7) have yet to get it going. Zobrist has had success against Bumgarner, going 6-for-12 with a double and a triple. Heyward (3-for-15 against Bumgarner) and C David Ross (0-for-2) have homered off him. Arrieta faced the Giants twice during the regular season and went 1-1, allowing three earned runs in 13 inning pitched. For his career, he’s 4-2 against San Francisco with a 1.81 ERA. In last year’s postseason, Arrieta went 2-1 with a 3.66 ERA in 19 2/3 innings.

In 27 innings this postseason—including the Wild Card Game—the Giants have scored just five runs. 3B Conor Gillaspie (3-for-9, 1 HR, 3 RBI) and LF Angel Pagan (3-for-10, 2B) have hit well, but SS Brandon Crawford (2-for-10, 2B), C Buster Posey (2-for-11, 2B), RF Hunter Pence (2-for-12) and 1B Brandon Belt (1-for-8) haven’t done much of anything offensively. San Francisco has really struggled against Arrieta. Crawford is 1-for-13 against him, Pence is 3-for-13, Posey is 1-for-15 and CF Denard Span (1-for-8) is 4-for-20. Pagan has seen the ball well against him, going 5-for-11 with a double. Bumgarner faced the Cubs twice this year and beat them both times, allowing just two earned runs in 13 2/3 innings. He’s dominated Chicago in his career, going 8-2 with a 2.25 ERA. In 97 1/3 postseason innings, the 2014 World Series MVP has gone 8-3 with an incredible 1.94 ERA.
